Welding Engineer

How will you make a difference?  

The Welding Engineer supervises our unionized hourly production workers who support manufacturing of the best locomotives and parts that move the world. The Welding Engineer is responsible for assessing/improving welding process continuously, conducting welding procedure qualification tests, ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols, identifying/resolving welding-related issues, and performing welding inspections/quality controls to Wabtec’s quality standards. The Welding Engineer is also responsible for ensuring that his/her team is working efficiently and effectively, providing high quality products and customer service to Wabtec’s stakeholders.    

What do we want to know about you? 

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or similar field from an accredited university or college or High School Diploma/GED with 5 years of related work experience as a Certified Welding Inspector (in lieu of degree requirement) 

Certified Welding Inspector Certification (preferred) 

Certified Associate Welding Inspector (within 1 year or less experience needed to obtain CWI) 

10+ years’ experience in welding using ARC, MIG, and Flux Core processes 

3-5 years of experience in manufacturing 

Minimum two current years’ experience in supervisory role in manufacturing industry 

Demonstrated leadership skills in cross-functional environment 

Oversee the entire welding process, from design to implementation 

Welding inspection and quality control proficiency 

In-depth understanding of various welding processes 

Welding procedure development ability 

Adaptability to address complex issues while still delivering to the customer 

Self-directed, detail oriented and highly organized 

Effectively lead hourly teams 

Responsible for all Time and Attendance functions 

 

What will your typical day look like?  

Analyze welding procedures and processes to ensure weld quality and integrity 

Inspect welded components to ensure adherence to design specifications and safety regulations 

Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including design engineers, production staff and quality assurance personnel 

Monitor and improve welding productivity and efficiency to reduce costs and improve performance 

Develop welding procedures that meet performance and quality standards 

Conduct welding procedure qualification tests 

Provide training/technical guidance 

Drive customer satisfaction through detailed focus on product reliability 

Provide direction and support for an assigned hourly production team encompassing EHS, Quality, Material, Process, and Delivery 

Help motivate all employees in his/her production team to perform their duties using established procedures to meet or exceed goals 

Develop welding techniques, procedures, and application of welding equipment 

Conduct research and development investigations to develop and test new fabrication processes and procedures 

Ensure compliance with safety protocols and procedures during welding operations 

Supervise and train hourly staff in welding techniques and safety 

Provide technical support to production staff and customers 

Prepare and present technical reports and performance metrics 

Conduct quality control of welding materials and final products 

Ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget 

Conduct performance reviews and provide coaching and feedback to hourly team 

Maintain Safety and Quality standards by reducing the risk for hazards and defects 

Ensure operational alignment with production plan and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) 

Supervise staff including hiring, employee communications, training, discipline, evaluation, and termination responsibilities 

Responsible for all Time and Attendance functions of hourly workforce 

 

Our job titles may span more than one career level.  The salary range for this role is between $77,400 to $110,300. 

 

The actual salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands and work location.  The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.  More information on benefits offered, which include health, welfare and retirement, are available at www.mywabtecbenefits.com.
