Job Summary
The Vice President of Taxation reports to the Senior Vice President of Tax and is responsible for shaping and executing the Company’s tax strategy to support growth, optimize shareholder value, and ensure ongoing compliance. Leads aspects of the Company’s tax compliance and planning function, including strategic planning, partnership tax, REIT compliance and property taxes. Manages a team of tax professionals and collaborate with the Company’s senior business leaders, external advisors, and regulatory agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities
Income Tax
Leads the preparation and review of all federal and state tax filings, including complex partnership tax filings and K-1 analysis.Provides strategic tax guidance and planning, including entity structuring, transactions, dispositions and 1031 exchanges.Oversees the Company’s REIT qualification testing, including income and distribution tests as well as shareholder requirements.Projects REIT taxable income to support the Company’s dividend distribution planning.Directs capital account and debt allocation processes, including economic capital account maintenance (704b), tax basis capital account maintenance, and debt allocations to partners (REIT and non-REIT).Serves as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on emerging tax issues and opportunities and monitor tax-related issues.Partners with Finance and Accounting to monitor and adjust franchise, excise and income tax accruals and disclosures, including deferred tax assets/liabilities and valuation allowances.Manages all tax compliance audits, examinations and tax risk assessments.
Property Taxes
Oversees the Company’s property tax strategy, including valuation analyses, reviews, appeals and tax estimate integrity. Manages third-party consultants and internal processes for real and personal property tax, ensuring efficiency and cost savings.Directs all aspects of budgeting, planning and compliance to support the property tax process, including supervision of tax estimates for potential acquisitions and developments.Monitors economic and regulatory trends impacting property taxes.Ensures tax bills and business licenses are accurately filed and paid timely.
Leadership & Management
Leads, mentors, and develops a team of tax professionals.Fosters cross-functional collaboration with Operations, Finance, Legal and other departments.Champions process improvements and technology adoption to enhance tax operations.Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the needs of the business.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Taxation, or a related field required
10-15 years of professional tax experience, inclusive of a minimum of five (5) years in public accounting and corporate tax, are required
Supervisory/management experience at the director-level or above required.
Preferred Qualifications
Active CPA license preferred
Master’s degree preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of real estate and partnership agreements, including tax and accounting principles, K-1 analysis, capital account management, 1031 planning, etc.
Working knowledge of real and personal property tax, including valuation and tax appeal processes, tax payment management, and planning.
Knowledge and skill with interpreting financial reporting, tax laws and regulations specific to REITs
Skills to supervise and manage the performance of a team, including selection, delegation, and coaching.
Skill and ability to demonstrate a hands-on approach and success in working in a team-based environment.
Skill and ability to clearly and concisely communicate verbally and in writing.
Skill in applying critical thinking, analysis and problem-solving methods.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint)
