VP & Business Unit Manager – Laser Systems & Measurement (LSM)

The VP & Business Unit Manager for the Laser Systems & Measurement (LSM) group in Wilsonville, Oregon will be responsible for profitably growing the LSM business while maintaining high levels of employee engagement.  Coherent Wilsonville focuses on design, development and manufacturing and is the Center of Excellence of Laser Component and System integration for the Bio-Instrumentation marketplace where we integrate commercially available components, such as laser diodes or other lasers (primarily Coherent sourced) and add value to create Laser Excitation Engines for Bio-Instrumentation devices. The products offered are highly value added and serve a variety of applications for Bio-Instrumentation, Laser Metrology Equipment and Machine Vision tools, reaching into many industries such as research, development and medical markets. The division is part of the Lasers business group, reporting into the Industrial segment of Coherent Corporation. This division serves external customers located in Asia, Europe, Middle East and the Americas as well as other divisions / business units within Coherent Corp.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Full responsibility for the P&L covering operations, engineering, marketing, and product marketing Direct oversight of department managers responsible for product marketing, manufacturing operations, supply chain, engineering, R&D and quality. Oversee a team of about 120 direct and indirect reports and ensure employee engagement, ownership, organization development, and accountability.  Ensure managers and supervisors are vested in employee development and career growth, to maintain high level employee satisfaction and retention.  Works with the Controller to create quarterly and annual budgets, provide periodic forecasts, monitor performance and report on status versus budget and forecast.  Coordinate and lead quarterly business reviews with segment executives and stake holders as well as quarterly townhall events for local staff. Collaborate with Product Marketing to understand customer needs and assess the competitive landscape, to develop a product roadmap that offers differentiated and valued added products. Support Product Marketing and maintain a liaison with key customers. Ensure Engineering and R&D groups are working on projects that are of the utmost value to customers as identified by Product Marketing, and those that reduce product costs. Work with the Operations Manager to staff the manufacturing, manufacturing engineering, facilities, quality, customer service and EH&S functions to ensure a productive and lean operation that delivers high quality products at the lowest cost.  Work with the Supply Chain Manager to manage procurement, inventory, production planning and shipping to ensure an efficient SIOP process that captures customer demand and delivers products while keeping inventory low.  Work with the Quality Manager to ensure adherence to ISO standards and foster continual improvement of quality systems and procedures Foster Lean Manufacturing and a culture of Continuous Improvement.  Domestic and International travel 20%

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in physics, materials science, optics or other engineering fields. Graduate degree preferred.  Experience and proven accomplishments in design, development, and manufacturing of similar industry products.  8-10 years of experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility leading, managing, and growing teams and presenting to executives. Demonstrated organizational agility working across functional groups at site level, across divisions and corporate functions.  Demonstrated ability to work with customers and suppliers to create mutually beneficial outcomes. Sound understanding of relevant markets, customers, and competition. Demonstrated ability in developing annual budgets and operating plans. Experience in developing business plans, growing a profitable business centered around highly technical product portfolio and managing its P&L is preferred.

Working Conditions

Generally, this position works full time onsite at our Wilsonville, OR facility with some flexibility to work on a hybrid basis when necessary.
