About the role

Reporting to the SVP, Enterprise and Operational Risk Management, the Vice President of Corporate Operational Risk & Resilience is accountable for:

The ongoing development and advancement of the Operational Risk Management Framework and related programs across the organization, and the provision of related tools and processes that enable and help to capture review and effective challenge by the 2nd line.Working collaboratively with the Business Group Chief Risk Officers and other Risk teams and leaders throughout the organization to fully and continuously assess the organization’s operational risk and resilience profiles and to bring focus to opportunities to improve outcomes for Clients and the businesses.Maintaining an understanding of regulatory developments effecting the Operational Risk and Resilience programs and working collaboratively with other teams/businesses to identify and implement efficient and effective solutions.Leading the Operational Resilience enterprise-wide initiative, in response to OSFI E-21, including maintaining an understanding of new developments, implementing policy and methodology, setting criteria and expectations across the organization.Leading a central Operational Risk and Resilience team, working with a diverse group of stakeholders and influencing stakeholders to ensure appropriate business outcomes and risk management.

What you'll be doing

The primary job responsibilities for the VP, Operational Risk Management & Resilience Initiatives include:

Lead the on-going development and implementation of the overall Operational Risk Management Framework, including building out the Resilience components of this framework.  This will include a common risk language and taxonomy, clearly defined processes, documented in appropriate policies and operating guidelines.Leverage the Framework for risk identification, risk measurement and aggregation, risk assessment and reporting, and risk management and mitigation related to operational risks and resilience.Ensure the effective functioning and comprehensive application of the key operational risk and resilience tools and methodologies: operational risk and resilience testing and event reporting, risk and control self-assessments, key risk indicators, operational risk and resilience-based scenario analysis and risk appetite.Work closely with Business Group Chief Risk Officers to improve processes and expand and enhance Sun Life’s operational risk management and resilience programs, and to bring focus to opportunities to improve outcomes for Clients and the businesses.Lead the quarterly OSFI meetings with respect to Operational Risk and Resilience and manage other regulatory inquiries or consultations related to operational risk.Accountable for the integrity and accuracy of the quarterly operational risk profile presented to senior management and the Board and building out the quarterly operational resilience risk profile across the organization.Maintain a consolidated perspective across Sun Life with respect to key operational risk considerations, resilience tolerances and gaps, events, initiatives, and emerging issues.Monitor and benchmark SLF operational risk and resilience practices against industry standards and best practices.  Develop external relationships including with industry associations and peer groups.Work closely with Compliance and Audit to provide a fulsome perspective on the operational risk and resilience across the organization.On-going development of Archer as a key platform to support the global operational risk program, and consideration of on-going opportunities to use technology to gain further insights or to support processes and reporting.On-going development of the Resilience technology platform to support the global operational resilience program.Bring an innovation and technology mindset to the enterprise-wide programs, including leveraging AI and data analytics to enhance insights and ensure efficiencies and user experience are top of mind.Identify and implement solutions necessary to ensure our tools keep pace with Policy, business and regulatory requirements.

What you'll need to succeed

Requires thinking within a general frame of reference toward functional objectives in situations with nebulous, intangible or unstructured aspects.Innovative mindset and broad strategic thinking.Leading cross functional and geographically diverse teams.Planning and organization: Creating long-term plans to carry out functional or cross-functional objectives established by top management.Excellent written and presentation skills including regulatory and board level presentation skills.Understanding of products, practices, and operational risks at Sun Life is an asset.Effective communication, negotiation, and conflict management skills.Effective change management, through impact and influence skills.Technology and innovation acumen including working knowledge of AI concepts and uses.

Education and Experience

Technical operational risk management knowledge.Technical operational resilience knowledge, including business continuity planning and disaster recovery methodologies and processes.Degree or certification in relevant risk related domains.Proven strategic leadership skills and working with global teams in multiple jurisdictions across broad time zones.Strong relationship management skills across varying levels in an organization including board, senior management and staff.Excellent coordination and process management skills.Experience in oversight, implementation and enhancement of risk management and resilience frameworks in large federally regulated financial institutions.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
