Volunteer Law Student - Summer 2026
Summary The Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board (FRTIB) is looking for a highly qualified and motivated individual to serve as a Volunteer Law Student. This Job Opportunity Announcement (JOA) may be used to fill other Volunteer Law Student positions within the FRTIB in the same geographical location with the same qualifications. This announcement has been extended through 09/19/2025. Responsibilities The FRTIB is filling a Student Volunteer Legal Internship for Summer 2026. This position is expected to begin at the end of May or early June and will extend through the summer. In rare situations, this internship may be extended. As a volunteer law student, you will: assist with a variety of independent legal research and drafting of legal memorandum; assist with conducting in-depth legal research in the areas of pension, tax, administrative law, privacy, procurement, benefits, investments, and loan activities; assist attorneys with drafting motions, petitions, and briefs in preparation of meeting and conferences; assist with the legal analysis of court orders to determine whether they meet FRTIB's statutory and regulatory requirements; assist in the review of contractual agreements and other documents for legal sufficiency; review and apply policies, procedures and regulations in order to provide responses to inquiries; assist with the review of a variety of legal cases; and analyze factual and legal issues to determine which facts are pertinent and which legal sources are applicable. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship is required. You must be at least 16 years old or older. All qualification requirements must be met prior to appointment. Must maintain student eligibility for the duration of the internship. Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background suitability investigation. You must be registered for selective service, if applicable. See Selective Service System. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: To qualify for this student volunteer internship, you must meet the below upon completion of the 2025-26 academic year: have completed one year of law school; and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher out of a 4.0 scale. Education You must provide your transcripts to support your educational claims. Transcripts may be unofficial copies, but they must come from an accredited college or university, and they also must include course names and the number of credit / semester hours. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
