Posting Details Posting Details Title Vivarium Technician (part time) Posting Number C00404JP Department Science Center Job Summary The Vivarium Technician plays a crucial role in the care and maintenance of Bowdoin College’s animal research facilities, ensuring the health and well-being of our research animals while adhering to all animal welfare regulations and protocols. The Vivarium Technician is responsible for: Performing duties related to the daily care of a variety of terrestrial and aquatic animals Inspecting assigned areas of responsibility daily and reporting animal illnesses, abnormal behavior and unsafe conditions to appropriate staff Inspecting animal housing daily for cleanliness, safety and maintenance issues. Performing all maintenance to keep systems functioning Observing safety policies and procedures regarding the use of equipment, materials and chemicals Maintaining accurate records of animal health, facility maintenance, and inventory using electronic and paper systems Training students on animal handling, safety protocols, and equipment use
The hourly rate for this position is $25.00 per hour. Education/Skills Requirements Bachelor’s degree in animal science, biological sciences, or related field; Will consider applicants with a high school diploma or equivalent + experience caring for animals in a laboratory environment Knowledge of animal welfare regulations and guidelines (e.g., AALAS, USDA, OLAW) highly preferred Ability to work in confined spaces and in a wide range of climate conditions, adhering to proper lab attire. Detail-oriented: High level of attention to detail to ensure standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety protocols are followed and that records are documented and maintained accurately Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills. Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with researchers and students and contribute positively to the team’s operations and working environment. Discretion: Ability to handle sensitive information with integrity and confidentiality Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents 1 year of laboratory experience, preferably within academic research setting highly preferred Working knowledge of environmental and water quality parameters

Standard Work Days and Hours This is an onsite, part-time, non-benefit eligible position working less than 10 hours/week Candidates must be able to work varying shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays, to support the daily need for animal care
