The Role

The Vice President, International, BALA will oversee business and legal affairs for Condé Nast’s international business.  Reporting to the General Counsel in New York, this position will assume day-to-day responsibility for the provision of corporate and commercial legal support and services outside of the United States, including in the UK, EU, Asia and Latin America. 

The Vice President will counsel senior management and business staff on structuring, maintenance, and management of international operations, joint ventures and partnerships, while negotiating, drafting and reviewing a wide variety of agreements related to those businesses and keeping current with all relevant regulatory and compliance needs.  Where there is existing in-house counsel, the Vice President will assume responsibility for the line management of them and their teams, evolving and aligning them to the global approach, whilst ensuring local needs and sensitivities are met. Where there is currently no existing in-house counsel, the Vice President will work with local management to find the best cost-effective approach.  

The Vice President will also liaise regularly with other members of BALA, including Publishing, Entertainment, Content, Employment and Technology & Data to ensure effective cross-collaboration in the delivery of support by BALA to the wider Condé Nast business.

What will you be doing?

Finance & Operations

Lead BALA’s support to the F&O organisation for all markets outside of the US, ensuring that BALA provides appropriate levels of service to Finance, including Strategy, Tax & Treasury, Decision Support, Procurement and Programme Management. R

Responsible for managing compliance with Conde Nast’s portfolio of licensing arrangements across multiple regions and providing analysis of deals in order to respond to questions from the business. 

Develop a close working partnership with Advance Legal on the provision of legal support regarding all M&A opportunities, bringing in other CN L&P colleagues as needed. 


Revenue and Consumer

Lead BALA’s support on Revenue and Consumer law matters across markets outside of the US.

Develop a regionally based but globally consistent commercial legal service capable of supporting the needs of these teams in all regions and across all disciplines, including Ad sales, Consumer sales, Licensing, Events and Social. 

Liaise regularly with other members of BALA, including Publishing, Entertainment, Content and Technology & Data. 

Build out appropriate workflows and processes using Legal Ops and smart location strategy to ensure timely, consistent and cost-effective support is provided across markets. Take responsibility for the Advertising Guidelines, ensuring teams are maintaining and enhancing these.

 

US Legal (including Advance Publications)

Work with the General Counsel and liaise with US peers in BALA, including Publishing, Entertainment, Content and Technology & Data to ensure legal support in international markets is aligned with the US market.

For global projects and developments, agree on a plan with US peers in BALA that appropriately combines US-based resource, international resource, Advance Legal support and expertise and outside counsel. 

 

Support to the GC with respect to Legal Operations

Support the General Counsel with the development of the legal operations for BALA, including strategy and budget. This will include working together on:

Departmental strategic priorities and goals for each year

The development and implementation of the annual budget

Review and agree on outside counsel

Location Strategy

Legal & Policy Operations Strategy

Interactions with Advance Publications, ELT, market leadership and other key internal stakeholders

About You:

Significant legal experience gained in a house environment

Expertise in Corporate law and major revenue transactions

Experience in delivering legal services in a major multinational corporation

Experience of working in a matrix reporting environment

Experience in legal team management, budgeting and reporting

Familiarity with Legal Operations, Compliance, Technology and Process improvement

Willingness and ability to periodically undertake travel between New York and London, and potentially to other markets
