Responsibilities

Provides medical care to animals used in support of lab project goals. 

Exercises independent professional judgment in the assessment of animal health and consults with veterinarians and investigators regarding appropriate diagnosis, therapy, and management. 

Schedules and provides fee-for-service technical assistance to research personnel for animal-related procedures.

Assists in the planning, implementation, and modification of animal use in experiments. 

Works directly with the veterinarians and interacts with staff, residents, medical students, and other personnel using the animal facilities to exchange information and resolve problems. 

Serves as a surgical tech in the operating room, administering anesthesia and providing postoperative care. 

Trains residents/fellows/temporary lab personnel in laboratory animal methodology. 

Responsible for maintaining anesthetic, surgical, and radiological equipment and medical supplies, including pharmaceuticals. 

Additional duties may be assigned as the required to fulfill departmental responsibilities.



Qualifications

An associate degree in veterinary technology with two years’ experience with lab animal species, and a Veterinary Technologist Certification, is required. Experience with surgical research (mainly large animal) is preferred.

Certification as Laboratory Animal Technician or Laboratory Animal Technologist through the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science is desirable. 

Must be able to follow oral and written directions with ease, thrive in a team-based environment, and have the ability to organize and carry out medical and surgical techniques independently. 

This requires good manual dexterity and the ability to meet the physical requirements of the position.

This offers the potential for flexible hours, but nights, weekends, and holidays will be required intermittently.

$27.44 - $41.16 / hour; Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
