Veterinary Surgery Technician/Assistant JOB SUMMARY We are looking for an experienced and detail-oriented Veterinary Surgery Technician or Assistant to support our veterinary surgeon and provide optimal care before, during, and after surgical procedures. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable in anesthesia, surgical preparation, and post-operative care, with a passion for animal welfare and teamwork. RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES Patient Care: Assist in the care and monitoring of surgery patients, including preparing for and supporting surgical procedures, sterile field setup and maintaining proper surgical instruments. Treatment Administration: Monitor and maintain anesthesia levels as directed by the veterinary surgeon. Monitor patients’ vital signs before, during and after surgery, including heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, blood pressure, ETCO2 and anesthetic depth. Prepare and maintain surgical equipment and supplies, ensuring a sterile environment. Assist with pre-surgical patient assessments and prepare patients for surgery, including placement of IV catheters and diagnostic testing. Provide post-surgical care, including pain management, monitoring recovery, and educating clients on aftercare instructions. Diagnostic Support: Collect diagnostic samples (blood, urine, biopsy, etc.) for testing and assist with diagnostic imaging procedures (X-rays, CT scans, Ultrasounds, etc.). Client Education: Communicate with pet owners about treatment plans, medication administration, side effects, and post-treatment care instructions. Clinical Procedures: Assist with routine and specialized procedures such as catheter placement, blood draws, and administering injections. Laboratory Work: Prepare and process laboratory samples, run diagnostics, and assist in interpreting results. Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and detailed medical records for patients, including treatment plans, progress notes, and any adverse reactions. Inventory Management: Ensure that surgery and surgical-related supplies are stocked and properly maintained. Team Collaboration: Work closely with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and support staff to ensure a high standard of care and patient comfort. QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or equivalent (required). 3 years of experience as a veterinary technician or assistant Veterinary Technician Certification (LVT, RVT, or CVT) preferred. Experience in veterinary surgery or a similar specialty is highly desirable but not required. Strong knowledge of veterinary medical terminology, animal behavior, and procedures. Proficiency with medical equipment, including IV pumps, infusion pumps, and diagnostic tools. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to provide compassionate and clear explanations to clients. Ability to handle sensitive situations with empathy and professionalism. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Ability to lift and carry animals and equipment up to 50 pounds. Ability to stand for long periods and perform physical tasks in a fast-paced environment. Comfort working with potentially ill and difficult-to-handle animals.
