Purpose:
The Flagstaff Ranger District, Timber Program is one of the most active timber programs in the country. They have a very dedicated and proactive program that seeks to increase pace and scale of forest restoration activities and fuels reduction projects. Their current program is focused on laying out, painting and implementing projects that directly impact and protect the;
Upper Rio de Flag watershed the City of Flagstaff The San Francisco Peaks Wilderness.
There are many different facets that go into planning, preparing and implementing these types of restoration projects and all members of the Flagstaff Timber Program are actively involved.
The process for this work starts in the Silviculture shop where they inventory the predetermined project areas and develop silvicultural prescriptions that outline what types of treatments should occur on these dedicated areas. They then walk these units and lay them out based on operational feasibility.
Next is to paint and GPS the boundaries. Then they use the prescriptions to paint the trees that are to stay or go. Once all that is done, a contract is constructed, advertised and awarded. Then the logging and service work begins.
Description of Duties:
Layout unit boundaries for hand thinning and/or mastication projects. Conducting contract inspection for previously awarded thinning contracts and assisting in the evaluation of stand conditions to determine future treatment needs.Select and mark individual trees for harvest/retention using well defined marking guidelines and silvicultural prescriptions.Revisit previously established monitoring plots to evaluate post-treatment conditions. Opportunity to help other programs like wildlife, botany, archeology, etc., with surveys in support of hazardous fuels reduction work.If permissible under the program, we would utilize the employees(s) on a limited basis to support our post-fire reforestation efforts. These duties/responsibilities include: Assist with tree planting projects, including planting unit layout and planting contract inspection.Examine recent plantations to assess numbers of tree seedlings present, condition, growth, survival rates, evidence of animal, insect or disease damage, and potential thinning needs. Evaluate reforestation needs across recent high severity fires and old timber harvests.
Qualifications:
United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien At least 17 years of age Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
