Job Summary
The physician assistant (PA) is a licensed provider who has acquired a broad range of knowledge and skills through the successful completion of a physician assistant program. The PA works closely with the physicians in the Urogynecology division to meet the physical, psychological and social needs of patients and their families. The PA may act as the primary resource to the inpatient and outpatient staff in dealing with both routine (rounding, discharge preparation) and acute patient management issues, contacting the attending in emergent situations (or as needed). Operative duties include assisting in surgeries and managing postoperative care under the supervision of the attending staff. Outpatient duties will include seeing patients for office/emergency room visits for preoperative and postoperative or acute issues; returning phone calls for routine, pre-operative and post-operative patients, as well as managing prescription refills andother necessary paperwork.
The physician assistant works under the supervision of an attending physician and reports directly to the department administrator or chief physician assistant administratively.
The PA is expected to travel to different Urogynecology clinic and hospital sites.
Qualifications
Inpatient Clinical Duties
Care of hospitalized Urogynecologic patients:Perform admission history and physical exam and accurately record in the patient recordChange surgical dressingsRemove sutures and staplesWrite daily progress notesWrite ordersDictate discharge summaries and/or complete discharge paper workAssist in making appropriate post hospitalization appointments and referralsCommunicate with referring health care providers and institutionsWrite prescriptionsRespond to Urogynecologic inpatient floor pages to evaluate situations that may represent variance in normal hospital course.Act as liaison between Urogynecologic inpatient floors/patient care teams and outpatient area, or in the case of transfer within the hospital, other care entities.Round with individual team members as requested, report back to team leadersImplement attending physician instructions for patient management in close cooperation with nursing staffPerform procedures within the PA scope of practice and as directed by the attending including:Order and interpret appropriate laboratory testing and other special examinations as requestedServe as a resource to the health care team for patient care issuesCollaborate with care coordinator for all patient care referralsPrepare succinct and accurate sign-out to facilitate the smooth transition of patient careAssist in the planning and implementation of discharging patientsAdditional Competencies and Tasks in Care of Outpatient Urogynecological Patients
