About the Function:  

 Global Tax comprises c250 professionals based in 80 countries globally, responsible for all taxes.   

Within Global Tax, the Employment Taxes Team deliver on their responsibility for managing the global employment taxes agenda.   The UK is the HQ location with over 5000 employees, and there are c28,000 employees with annual Employment Taxes collected and paid of c£500m globally.  

 

Market Complexity: The role requires a comprehensive understanding of Employment Taxes and Social Security, Share Schemes and Expatriate taxation. Knowledge of cross-jurisdictional employment tax & social security issues is preferred. 

 

About the team:  

The Employment Taxes Team comprises a group of 9 subject matter experts covering all regions globally.  The main hub is the UK where 3 of the team are based and manage both UK and global co-ordination.  The rest of the team are based in the US covering NAM, Colombia covering LAC, Ireland and the Netherlands covering Europe, India covering APAC and Kenya covering Africa. 

 

About the role:  

 

The role is UK technical and business partnering, including UK-touching cross border issues.  Working with the Senior Manager and reporting in to the Associate Director for some aspects, you will be accountable for all UK employment tax returns, partnering with team members and supporting with advisory and consulting projects.

 

Role Responsibilities: 

 

The role will require extensive business partnering; proactive support to partners; HR (including Payroll), Reward, Global Tax, Global Mobility and Finance Directors.   

 

Supervising all aspects of UK employment tax compliance and taking accountability for 100% compliance in this area.  The role will also provide support for proactive strategic employment tax management (compliance & planning) for the UK to ensure the best approach is adopted. 

 

Training will be provided in areas where the candidate is less experienced, and the role provides the opportunity to develop expertise in risk management, automation of processes, global equity and employee trusts.   

 

Understand and engage in the management and monitoring of employment tax and social security risks in UK.  

Advise, guide and educate partners on key employment tax issues to enable the business to adopt and enforce relevant tax policies and standards, and mitigate tax and reputational risk.  

Execute specific tax related processes/activities following agreed global standard processes and governance framework and identify opportunities for standardisation and simplification.  

Participate in tax projects to deliver shareholder value/mitigate employment tax risks.  

Provide support on employment tax and social security audits and tax enquiries.  

Ensure that the business is kept up to date with, and is made aware of, legislative changes. 

Liaise with advisers to gain knowledge of employment taxes topical issues in UK.  

Review all aspects of the remuneration package to ensure that non-cash items are being treated correctly for UK tax and social security. 

Prepare compliance submissions to HMRC where reports are not dealt with by Payroll. Ensure liabilities arising from such submissions are paid on time - (SAO, PAYE/NI audits, collating data and producing the annual PSA computation, Taxed Award Scheme, Short Term Business Visitors, Foreign Entertainers, Construction Industry Scheme, Termination report; expenses, benefits etc plus input to Payroll on PAYE/P11D reporting and processes). 

Ensure that equity files provided by the provider are processed correctly and that reclaims of tax withheld from employees are processed by Finance. Ensuring that payroll files relating to International Assignees are processed correctly and that all local non-cash items are picked up by advisers.  

Assist in testing of payroll items to ensure compliance. 

 

Qualification and Experience

   

Qualified accountant or tax adviser with experience in employment/payroll taxes, ideally with some in-house experience.  

Technical knowledge of employment taxes and social security in UK; year-end reporting, expenses management, etc.  

Knowledge of equity taxation is helpful but training can be provided. 

Previous involvement in tax authority audits is helpful. 

Experience of cross-border issues such as international assignees, business visitors and remote workers.

Numerate and computer literate including good knowledge of Word, Excel and Powerpoint, confident with video conferencing, Zoom, Teams etc. Knowledge of Alteryx would be an advantage, but training can be provided.
