Responsibilities:

Transport patients by wheelchair, stretcher, bed, specialty bed, or assist with the movement of ambulatory patients, ensuring safety and comfort at all times. Use proper procedures when handling medical equipment such as IVs, oxygen tanks, heart monitors, transport monitors, ventilators, and related devices. Utilize assistive equipment such as lift machines, smooth movers, and gait belts in conjunction with nursing staff to ensure safe lifting and patient transfers. Assist with heavy lifting in patient care areas and help train hospital staff in the proper use of assistive and dependent mechanical lifts. Respond to Code Blue, Rapid Response, Stroke Alerts, and Orderly Stat calls; perform chest compressions and assist with transport to ancillary departments during emergencies. Communicate and respond to urgent or emergency situations in accordance with established protocols and notify appropriate staff as needed. Transport deceased patients to the morgue, complete all required documentation, and communicate with Security as necessary. Deliver the patient’s chart and completed Ticket to Ride form, and accompany patients to and from nursing units and ancillary departments. Perform or assist with draping and garbing patients in robes, slippers, and blankets to maintain modesty during transport. Recognize patients at risk for falls and communicate this information appropriately during patient hand-off. Obtain and interpret information with sensitivity to age-specific patient needs. Collect, clean, and distribute traction equipment and overhead frames, returning them to proper storage locations. Maintain a clean, aseptic, and safe environment, and follow a routine schedule for cleaning, inspecting, and maintaining patient care equipment. Distribute portable oxygen tanks from Shipping and Receiving to patient rooms as directed by Case Management to support patient discharge. Participate in department quality assurance and improvement activities and enter transport data accurately in designated tracking systems. Demonstrate UPMC Hamot’s commitment to service excellence by consistently responding to the needs of patients, families, physicians, and coworkers with professionalism, accuracy, and compassion. Adhere to UPMC Hamot’s Attendance and Tardiness Policies and maintain a record free of written corrective action during the performance review period.
