Job Summary

The Nutrition Specialist of Transplant researches nutritional needs for patients with complex medical conditions and develops care plans. Provides nutrition therapy and education to patients, families, and the community. Evaluates patient dietary needs and implements nutrition therapy. Documents patient response to care. Provides nutritional counseling for patients with complex diets. Develops and conducts educational and in-service training programs. Participates in multi-disciplinary patient rounds or patient case conferences.

Essential Functions of the Role

Perform nutritional assessment of patients with complicated medical conditions using advanced data. Examine patient information by interviewing patients or caregivers and reviewing medical records. Interpret and apply results.Assess calorie, protein, fluid, vitamin, mineral, insulin, and electrolyte needs. Formulate and individualize intravenous and enteral nutrition therapy. Manipulate macro and micronutrients. Establish total parental nutrition therapy rates and duration. Monitor biochemical indices. Recommend laboratory tests and evaluate intolerance and causes. Develop tube feeding orders and protocols. Prescribe tube feeding formulations. Develop care plans.Provide 1-on-1 or group nutrition counseling for complex diets with restrictions. Assess factors affecting dietary compliance, such as socio-economic factors, past history, and family dynamics. Establish and implement dietary plans. Provide information on fitness and exercise related to weight management and diet.Document pertinent information in appropriate medical record and monitor patient to establish need for appropriate modification in nutritional management.Participate in multi-disciplinary patient rounds, case conferences, and discharge planning. Gather and exchange information, ask about patient response to care plans, and maximize care efficiency. Participate in meetings on nutrition education, patient care standards, or dietetic internship programs to gather and exchange information.Research, develop, and deliver educational programs for patients, families, staff, dietetic interns, community groups, and healthcare professionals. Develop nutrition educational tools like handouts, pamphlets, and booklets. Document training programs for Baylor Scott & White Health (BSWH) Staff. Assist with training, instruction, and evaluation of dietetic interns. Develop nutrition classes, educational materials, and curriculum for the dietetic internship program.Participate in research studies through data collection and literature reviews or as co-investigator. Develop and deliver presentations on research-related topics.Maintain current knowledge of nutrition services by reading literature, attending workshops, seminars, and conferences, and joining professional organizations. Evaluate and use relevant current research information related to nutritional care.Participate in Quality Assurance Program by assisting in development of patient care criteria and studying actual care delivered.
