Description of Duties:
Native Lands, National Trails (NLNT) project Native Lands, National Trails (NLNT) is a project that was created in collaboration with the Partnership for the National Trails System, Native Land Digital, Bureau of Land Management and Ancestral Lands Conservation Corp (ALCC). Now hosted with ALCC, NLNT continues the project work to create and share resources designed to inform the public and help National Trails and their nonprofit organization partners to advance the National Trails System’s knowledge of Indigenous ancestral Lands through partnership and collaboration with Indigenous communities along National Scenic and Historic Trails.
This project will inventory and map recreation amenities on Tribal lands to enhance recreation opportunities for Tribal members and the visiting public, where appropriate. In addition to increasing awareness of existing assets, this project will also aid planning efforts to identify areas for future investment, including recreation access and lands in need of protection. The NPS supports sustainable recreation, which prioritizes protection of lands and resources while also providing world-class outdoor recreation experiences, inspiring visitors to become stewards of the lands and waters they recreate on.
The project works toward collecting and developing geospatial data about recreation amenities on Tribal lands for display on digital geospatial platforms chosen collaboratively between the two national trails. The data will inform planning efforts, raise awareness of available amenities, and expand public access to recreation along the trails. For data collected on site or developed directly with Tribes, the level of privacy of the data will be determined in collaboration with the Tribes. For amenities closed to the public, the intern will create mapping products upon request for participating Tribes. Possible products could include an ESRI Experience Builder, ArcGIS Online web application and hosted data, Story Map, NPS Points of Interest and place assets for use with NP Map and the NPS App. This intern will have access to training and project and education materials related to GIS, National Trails, Indigenous and ethical research practices through NLNT. Research and tribal engagement for data collection and mapping for additional topics may be explored.
The Individual Placement (IP) will work directly with the Trail Planner at Anza NHT and the Tribal Liaison/Cultural Anthropologist at Lewis and Clark NHT, gaining insight into the work that is accomplished in these positions and assisting with tasks as interest and time allows. In-person travel to meet these staff will take place for additional training, work planning, and mentorship. Additionally, the IP will interact with other team members with both trails, especially the Geographer and Outdoor Recreation Planner at Lewis and Clark NHT and the Interpretive Specialist and Visual Information Specialist at Anza NHT, and will attend staff meetings, as appropriate.
As interest and time allows, the IP will have the opportunity to hold informational interviews virtually and in person with other team members to learn about their career paths, current responsibilities, and other relevant topics. There will be opportunities to meet and potentially collaborate with a cohort of GIS interns who work with the trail as well. The National Trail System GIS network is another community of practice that meets quarterly and has an open Microsoft Teams channel that can serve as an opportunity for networking and professional development. Last, the IP will be invited to attend and participate in conferences that the National Trail staff and partners attend, such as the CA Trails and Greenways conference and the National Trails Workshop. Many online trainings are available through DOI talent and LinkedIn learning at no cost to interns with a partner account email.
