Traffic Engineer
At Jacobs, we are seeking a Traffic Engineer in our Midtown Atlanta office. You will perform various tasks as a traffic and safety engineer, including traffic signal and ITS design, traffic signal timing/operations, traffic engineering studies, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) communications, and data analytics. MARTA regularly performs hands-on signal operations work, so you will have the opportunity to program and troubleshoot traffic signals and ITS communications network equipment. You will perform various tasks as a traffic and safety engineer, including traffic signal and ITS design, traffic signal timing/operations, traffic engineering studies, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) communications, and data analytics. MARTA regularly performs hands-on signal operations work, so you will have the opportunity to program and troubleshoot traffic signals and ITS communications network equipment. * The Traffic Engineer will utilize their expertise by designing intersection and traffic design projects according to MARTA’s standards and plan development processes. We’ll look to you to develop traffic studies, traffic engineering reports, crash analyses, and other traffic and safety engineering tasks. Other duties consist of: * Evaluate the functionality and efficiency of traffic signals and communications equipment. This includes collecting data, analyzing traffic patterns, and preparing comprehensive reports that summarize findings and offer recommendations for right-of-way improvements. * Engage in the design, review, and programming of traffic signal systems. Troubleshoot issues effectively and perform necessary repairs on communication devices. Prepare in-depth reports detailing the work conducted and any changes implemented to enhance system performance. * Oversee assigned projects and tasks with a focus on effective management of activities and adherence to schedules. This involves coordinating with team members, allocating resources wisely, and ensuring timely delivery of project milestones. * Foster strong relationships with stakeholders by effectively managing their expectations and providing clear communication throughout the project lifecycle. Strive to ensure that stakeholders are not only satisfied but delighted with the outcomes of the projects. * Provide guidance and support to junior staff members, facilitating their professional development. This includes offering training sessions, sharing industry knowledge, and helping them build their skills to prepare for future challenges. * Be prepared for periodic travel within metro Atlanta. This may involve visiting project sites, attending meetings, and collaborating with local agencies to ensure successful project implementation. * Familiarity with MUTCD and traffic engineering principles. * Experience with traffic responsive and traffic adaptive systems. * Proficiency in software tools such as Synchro, ATSPM, VISSIM is a prerequisite, as these applications are essential for effective design and planning in traffic engineering. MicroStation and AutoCAD experience is also preferred. * Proficiency in conducting probe data analytics such as RITIS, ClearGuide. * Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software such as ArcGIS/Arc Map is also preferred. * The candidate should possess a strong understanding of reviewing and managing the performance and work of consultants, including the evaluation of data collection processes, analysis of reports, and the utilization of traffic modeling software. * They must have the ability to implement and effectively coordinate projects with both internal stakeholders at MARTA and external stakeholders, including the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), local cities/counties, and jurisdictional authorities. * A key responsibility will be supporting the planning and execution of transit signal priority initiatives aimed at enhancing the efficiency of public transit systems. This includes collaborating with various agencies to ensure that the needs of the community are met while optimizing traffic flow and reducing transit delays. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong analytical skills and the capacity to communicate complex technical information clearly to diverse audiences. * Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. * A certified Professional Engineer (PE) license is required. A Road Safety Professional (RSP) Certification, Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE), and International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA)Technical Level II is preferred. * Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering, Building Construction, Construction Management, or a related field.
