Pay range: approximately $30-35/hour, depending on experience

 

Position Summary 

 

The Track Inspector performs railroad inspection tasks such as inspecting industry tracks to ensure compliance with standard codes and ordinances, contract plans and specifications.  Inspections may be general in nature or limited to a specific area, such as ties, ballast, track, etc. The Track Inspector also recommends repairs and estimates repair budgets.  The Track Inspector performs safety tasks such as assisting with accident/incident investigations.  This position includes ancillary duties such as marketing to customers. 

 

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties 

 

Inspects track for compliance with contract requirements and applicable federal and state regulations 

Detect deviations from federal/state and/or customer regulations 

Provides written and oral updates to Chief Inspector on job status 

Prepares inspection reports showing prioritized repairs, budget estimates, and budget plans 

Works with office/field personnel, Chief Track Inspector, and other team members to achieve productivity goals and help resolve operations problems and difficulties 

Interfaces with customers, and markets our services throughout the territory 

Responsible for the care and implementation of tools utilized in the field 

Conducts job audits for the purposes of safety inspections, quality control, and cost control 

Participates in and/or conducts regularly scheduled safety/operations meetings with the team and field employees 

 Works directly with customer as needed 

Reviews plans, designs, and specifications 

Coordinates with other operating departments, including Safety, Equipment/Shop managers, etc. 

Maintains documentation files for projects, training, and other activities 

Assists with training of possible future inspection staff 

Assists Manager Division Safety with Root Cause investigations and management of injuries 

Responds to occasional callouts and emergencies at night, weekends, and holidays 

Writes proposals, letters, and reports 

  

 

Required Skills and Qualifications  

 

TWIC card, RWP training, FRA Training, First Aid/CPR Training, Basic Plus, and site-specific training 

Must possess a valid driver’s license 

High school diploma with 1-2 years college credits in business or construction a plus 

Must be able to oversee smooth paper flow regarding timesheets, purchase orders, force accounts, material reports, expense reports, and invoices  

Willingness to continue honing skills through training, experience, and education 

Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite. 

At least 2 years track maintenance and/or construction experience 

CFR 213 qualified or be able to complete qualification 

 

 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions 

 

Frequently works at construction sites 

Required to drive long distances and able to do air travel occasionally with overnight stays throughout territory 

Frequently stands, climbs, balances, walks, stoops, and crouches while negotiating work areas under construction 

Walks on uneven surfaces 

Operates railroad switches (requires bending, kneeling, etc.) 

Lifts up to 15 pounds 

Sits, reads, writes, and uses a keyboard 

May be exposed to harsh weather conditions including very hot and very cold weather 

May be exposed to loud noise and dust.
