Tooling Design Engineer

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) is looking for a Tooling Design Engineer to help support Vertical Integration!

We are currently looking to grow our mold making capacity and we are looking for an experienced Tooling Design Engineer, for our factory in Lewiston, ID. You’ll work alongside other Mechanical Engineers to support our toolroom design needs, designing molds and dies using modern CAD tools to promote efficient manufacturing with a wide variety of specialized equipment, including WEDM/EDM, milling, grinding, and metal 3D printing!

As a Tooling Design Engineer, a typical day will include the following:

Design injection mold tooling with the potential to expand into stamping, die cast, and progressive die. 

Consult on part DFM for injection molding processes, tooling capabilities or limitations, and perform associated analysis in determining cost/delivery.  

Provide quotes for part and tooling costs for internally and externally built tools. Determine appropriate tool design/layout to recommend based on estimated annual usage, required turnaround time, and other factors. 

Lead or participate in cross functional project teams designed to introduce new products, improve existing products, and improve manufacturing processes. 

Develop and implement tooling/manufacturing cost reduction actions consistent with Lean Manufacturing principles. 

Maintain knowledge of industry standards for tool design, machinery, engineering standards, and new technologies. 

Other duties as assigned. 

This job might be for you if you have:

B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent combination of related education and experience.  

2+ years’ experience in two or more of the following areas: 

- Precision machining processes 

- SPI Standards & Practices of Plastics Molders 

- Injection mold design 

- Progressive die design 

Strong problem-solving skills 

Strong project management experience 

Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills 

Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities 

Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment 

Background check results satisfactory to SEL 

Negative drug test result(s)

Pay Range Information:

The pay range for this role is $88,600 – $108,100 annually. We base our starting pay offer on location and job-related factors such as candidate experience, training, knowledge, and skills. Our ranges are determined by job, responsibility, and location.
