This position is located at 900 Washington Ave, Brooklyn, New York, 11225 United States Role Summary

The Design Manager leads our Design Services team that creates floral and container design projects in-store, off-site, and in private residential settings. They also design and execute projects for events. The Design Manager is responsible for driving sales by providing the highest level of service through expert knowledge, design, and leadership for the Design Services program. 

Role Responsibilities

Customer Experience 

Leads a team of Artisans to uphold terrain’s four promises: to welcome, to inspire, to inform and to appreciate our customerBuilds genuine, long-lasting relationships through personalized attention and guiding on customer choices to reflect their unique personal styleUnderstands terrain retail concepts and partners with design leadership to create a cohesive environment through compelling plant installations and displaysExhibits an understanding of and interest in home and garden trends in art, style, color, design, and architecture; translates trends and customer needs into brand appropriate designsContributes to the planning and execution of events that are reflective of the interests of the local customer and surrounding community

Leadership + Team Management

Builds productive relationships with members of the store team and corporate partners contributing to a culture of strong communication and teamwork 

Partners with the Store Manager in identifying and onboarding external talent; invests in internal employee engagement to retain a diverse team and fuel internal growth 

Sets clear objectives and expectations by coaching team members on analysis of business related to visual presentation to achieve department sales goals 

Utilizes brand resources to teach standards of product flow and merchandising; develops teams’ product knowledge to appeal to the local customer 

 

Takes initiative and works productively solo or within a team to achieve design goals; actively participates in daily meetings and shares relevant information regarding plant design projectsBuilds and maintains productive partnerships with members of the store team contributing to a culture of strong communication and teamwork; is open and responsive to feedbackCommunicates daily with the Design team on client consultations, design details, and project updates; manages client design file and ensures prompt customer communication with project inquires 

Visual + Business Operations

Collaborates with the store leadership team to plan a strategic approach to the week protecting time for product flow processes, merchandising, display needs, and plant care; creates strategies for new product placement and recovery of sell-through and markdowns 

Manages the seasonal visual direction from planning through execution to meet Company expectations, budgets, and timeline while strategizing according to individual store characteristics 

Analyzes store business using company reporting tools to identify merchant opportunities to drive sales; motivates store leadership to make strategic, creative, and business-impacting decisions  

Adheres to store’s safety standards, inventory accuracy, reduction of product loss, and upholds all company policy and procedures to support the profitability of the store 

 

Works with customers using creative event and residential proposals, to achieve both maximum revenue/profit potential while exceeding customer expectations 

Conceptualizes and executes high end event design and residential projects incorporating innovative use of colors, floral and textural materials and vessels, while meeting established criteria for Terrain aesthetic and cost of goods 

Leads and participates in the execution and setup of installations and events; Understands and applies design principles to execute projects with high level of craft 

Maintains cleanliness and organization of back of house studio areas 

Adheres to store’s safety standards, inventory accuracy, reduction of product loss, and upholds all company policy and procedures to support the profitability of the store 

Communication + Relationships

Leads with an inclusive and people-first philosophy; protects time for employees at all levels to encourage open dialogue, reinforce follow through, and ensure that the store team is heard and supported 

Consistently checks in with leadership to maintain communication and ensure completion of store directives and projects; stays current and responds to all communication in a timely manner while ensuring important company information reaches all levels of the team 

Provides store and product insights related to the customer experience and communicates to brand leadership and Home Office partners; participates within company forums through sharing store specific scenarios and ideas  

Embraces a culture of development by protecting time with direct reports and consistently delivering feedback for individual personal growth and succession planning 

Role Qualifications Terrain brand fan3+ years store visual merchandising and leadership experience  

Strong merchant skills and a history of delivering financial results 

Experience with floor planning  

Proven record of developing great talent 

Ability to work flexible hours to meet the needs of the store including nights, weekends, and holidays
