**Job Summary**
University Information Technology ( UIT ) has an opening for a full-time, benefited Telephone Operator on the Campus Operators team. Until further notice, this position is eligible for hybrid or on-site work within Utah. Please note that on-site training is required, and regular on-site work is currently scheduled once a week, every Thursday.
An employee hired into this role who telecommutes will be responsible for providing space, telephone, printing, networking and/or internet capabilities at the telecommute location and signing the University of Utah Telecommuting Agreement. The employee will also be responsible for transportation and related expenses for on-site work.
The incumbent will function as a Campus Telephone Operator, answering incoming calls, transferring calls to the appropriate lines, providing general information, and resolving password/two-factor authentication (2FA) issues.
This position will report directly to the UIT Help Desk and Campus Operators Supervisor. This job description is not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, responsibilities, and qualifications required of employees assigned to the job.
**Responsibilities**
Employees work independently while answering incoming telephone calls. Operators routinely investigate minor problems before transferring callers to appropriate person or department. Some challenges inherent to this position include providing efficient customer service for calls about issues, handling difficult or upset callers, and understanding callers for whom English is not their primary language. Incumbents are required to be aware of university current events, services, and information. Operators often perform duties under time pressure because of heavy call volumes and the need to minimize the time a caller is on hold. Weekly responsibilities include Mailroom operations at 102 Tower, which involve providing customer service to residents and patrons, sorting and logging mail and packages, notifying recipients, and maintaining a safe, organized environment.
Operators must be patient and empathetic with callers to provide excellent customer service. Operators are often the first point of contact and must represent the university in a professional and courteous manner.
This position also serves as an entry level introduction to a technical skill set, including troubleshooting and support for users logging in to university systems and using Duo, the university’s two-factor authentication solution.
**Minimum Qualifications**
Six months customer service experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; demonstrated computer skills and human relation and effective communication skills also required.
**Preferences**
1. Ability to work effectively in a diverse, fast-paced environment.
2. Ability to work well independently and in a team.
3. Demonstrated interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
4. Knowledge of and experience with the University of Utah campus structure and operations.
**Type** Benefited Staff
