Job Title Technician II - Operations Agency Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory Department College Station - Operations Proposed Minimum Salary $23.13 hourly Job Location College Station, Texas Job Type Staff Job Description Job Description Summary The Technician II, under supervision, is responsible for supporting laboratory operations by preparing laboratory referral shipments and shipping hazardous materials (biological specimens) to domestic and international destinations. This position also includes sterilizing biohazardous waste, washing laboratory glassware, and laundering laboratory clothing. Responsibilities General Description: Is responsible for operating a laboratory consumable store, including inventory, filling sales, and shipping. Monitors and supports transportation and distribution activities within the supply chain to ensure timely deliveries and cost-effective shipping. Performs routine data entry, maintains equipment logs and completes routine verification activities. Receiving: Serves as point of contact for incoming shipments from carriers (FedEx, UPS, etc.) at the loading dock and client entrance areas. Assists with package receipt, sorts (samples versus consumable), and expeditiously delivers sample boxes to Client Services. Ensures that incoming supplies are inspected, dated, and promptly delivered to laboratory sections. Drives (Agency vehicle) to package pickup locations (USPS, LSO, Mail Services, CVM, etc.) for incoming and outgoing shipments. Is responsible for maintaining mileage logs and refueling vehicle as needed. Shipping: Assists with the day-to-day handling of outgoing referral and supply order shipments, including preparing, packaging, and processing. Ensures accurate labeling, documentation, and timely dispatch of materials. Prepares shipping papers, customs declarations, hazardous materials documents, and bills of lading to comply with applicable regulations. Ensures packing, loading, and documentation is in accordance with DOT/TDG/IATA/IMDG regulations. Monitors and tracks shipping status and communicates any delays. Follows established transportation and distribution procedures to support timely and efficient delivery of materials. Assists with selecting appropriate delivery methods, preparing shipments, and coordinating schedules based on existing guidelines. Monitors freight charges, verifies shipment classifications, and tracks delivery progress to help control costs and support customer satisfaction. Reports any discrepancies or delays to management. Laboratory Consumables Store: Maintains and operates a comprehensive consumable store, selling supplies, filling clients’ orders, and preparing orders for shipment or pickup. Monitors inventory levels of supplies and materials to ensure adequate stock is maintained. Identifies low stock items and submits re-fill order requests to management for approval and processing. Assists with receiving, organizing, and restocking supplies upon delivery, and maintains accurate inventory records in accordance with established procedures. Provides excellent customer service and assists clients with any ordering inquiries. Biohazard Sterilization: Develops and maintains a schedule to pick up biohazardous waste from laboratory sections. Sterilizes and discards biohazard waste following TVMDL, TAMU, State, and Federal regulations. Ensures SOPs and documentation are kept up to date and in compliance with policies, rules, and regulations. Communicates improvements and necessary changes to management. Keeps detailed records of each autoclave run and statistics of waste streams from each laboratory (i.e., how many bags, date, time, type, etc.). Provides reports to management as requested. Glassware Washing: Develops and maintains a schedule to pick up dirty laboratory glassware from laboratory sections. Washes and sterilizes laboratory glassware according to approved protocols. Delivers clean glassware to laboratory sections. Ensures SOPs and documentation are kept up to date and in compliance with policies, rules, and regulations. Communicates improvements and necessary changes to management. Laundry: Sterilizes and launders laboratory clothing. Delivers clean clothing to laboratory sections. Teamwork & Cooperation Fosters teamwork, cooperation, professional standards, and communication. May participate in flex scheduling, including work prior to 8 AM, after 5 PM, on weekends or on holidays. Participates in cross-training with other Operations staff members. Provides coverage and support across roles as needed to ensure continuity of operations, maintain service levels, and support team flexibility during staff shortages or peak workload periods. Proactively seeks additional tasks or assignments from management during periods of low activity to support team productivity and ensure continuous workflow. Assists in various duties as needed and demonstrates flexibility in supporting other functional areas. Quality Assurance & Safety: Adheres and conforms to quality assurance and safety programs and procedures. Assists in identifying incidents of nonconformance and noncompliance. Submits reports of nonconformances according to established schedules. Actively participates in quality assurance and safety programs. SOPs, Procedures, Forms, Other Documentation: Reviews quality assurance documents to ensure clarity of instructions. Ensures actions taken are appropriately documented and brings discrepancies to the attention of management. Administrative Duties Catalogs and inventories incoming supplies and stock inventory. Informs management when supply inventory is low. Other: Performs work with adherence to federal, state, Texas A&M University System, and TVMDL safety rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Performs work in such a way as to not expose others or myself to hazards that are avoidable by reasonable and approved methods. Occasional in-state travel is required. Operates assigned equipment in a safe manner and in adherence to all TAMUS, AgriLife, and TVMDL policies as well as local, state, and federal laws. Additional Details + This position is required to work onsite during normal business hours M-F 8 am to 5 pm. + TVMDL is located on the campus of Texas A&M University (TAMU). Parking permits are available from TAMU at the expense of the employee. + Incumbent will be required to take a pre-exposure rabies vaccination series; TVMDL will cover all costs. + TVMDL is considered an essential component of the Texas A&M University System (TAMUS) and remains operational for several “open holidays” in which overtime or compensatory time may be earned. Qualifications Required Education and Experience: + High school graduation or equivalent combination of training and experience. + Three years of related experience. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: + Knowledge of laboratory equipment, scientific apparatus, and computer equipment. + Ensures attention to detail. + Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. + Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Required Licenses/Certifications: + Must have a valid Texas motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment. Preferred Education and Experience: + Associates/Bachelor’s degree in a scientific program or equivalent combination of training and experience. + Three or more (3+) years of related experience. ​Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: + Knowledge of Microsoft Office – including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams. + Knowledge of DOT/IATA shipping regulations, various packaging methods and hazardous materials shipping, proper labeling procedures, and preparation of international and domestic bills of lading. + Knowledge of sterilizers and/or glassware washers. Experience working in fast paced/high volume environments. Preferred Licenses/Certifications: + DOT/IATA shipping certifications. + Forklift certification. All positions are security-sensitive .
