About the Department
The Public Relations team is one of the four public-facing verticals that makes up New York Road Runners’ Public Affairs department—which also includes Government Affairs, Community Engagement and Impact. The Public Relations team proactively develops relationships with media outlets and influencers to drive impactful, qualitative and quantitative press coverage and exposure for NYRR as a New York City-based nonprofit, its mission-driven free youth programs and community initiatives, its 60+ adult and youth events (which includes annual signature events—TCS New York City Marathon, the United Airlines NYC Half and the RBC Brooklyn Half®), while also elevating the organization and its executives as industry leaders.
About the Position
Reporting to the Head of Public Relations—with indirect reporting into the Media Operations Specialist and Chief Communications Officer—the Talent Operations Lead will join the department seasonally, ahead of and during the TCS New York City Marathon, from September through November. In this role, working 10-25 hours/week with hours increasing as the Marathon approaches, the Talent Operations Lead will be responsible for leading the logistics for celebrity / notable runners, including all related communication with runners / representatives for: lead-up media interviews; race-day VIP experience, and overseeing the operations of these runners in their VIP Start and Finish locations on race day.
Job Responsibilities (primary and secondary duties) :
+ PRE-RACE DAY – responsibilities include:
+ Act as the go-to NYRR contact for celebrity runners / representatives leading up to and during race for scheduling interviews (also liaising with NYRR’s PR agency) and answering race-week and race-day questions
+ Coordinate celebrity swag bags; work with NYRR intern on mailings and / in-person delivery as needed to Expo and meet notables when they pick up their bibs
+ Draft materials to organize and communicate celebrity / notable runner logistics
+ Participate in meetings and walkthroughs with internal PR team, Start event leads, PR agency team members, etc.
+ Support other PR-related projects related to specialty runners and guests.
+ RACE-DAY – responsibilities include:
+ Start:
+ Race morning, check-in celebrity / notable runners at midtown bus loading location; take the bus’s police escort to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge
+ Escort/staff runners in/to tent and oversee operations throughout the morning, coordinating with PR agency team members who are part of Celebrity / Notable Runners’ team
+ Coordinate with agency any on-site media interviews and moments with special guests (e.g., including the Grand Marshal and participants of relays)
+ Escort runners to the Start line
+ Ride PR/Broadcast sprinter van to the Finish
+ Finish:
+ Lead organization of celebrity items brought from Start (e.g., baggage) and recovery items inside Celebrity / Notable Runners’ Finish tent and ensure tent is show ready for runners; assist with tracking and escorting runners and coordinating photo-ops
+ Greet high-profile special guests (non-runners) on-site and escort to appropriate VIP areas
+ Coordinate with Celebrity / Notable Runners’ team to ensure special guests are brought to Finish line for photos with the runner when they cross finish
+ Coordinate photo-ops with PR team
+ Post-photo-op, escort special guests and runners as needed
+ Send celebrity runners professional photos post-race
Job Requirements:
Experience:
+ 3-5 years of experience in the Public Relations and/or talent management required.
+ Experience in events is required; large-scale events preferred.
Education & Certifications:
+ Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in English, Public Relations, communications, journalism or related field preferred
Skills and Attributes:
+ Excellent creative and critical thinking skills
+ Exceptional written and verbal communications skills
+ A collaborator with strong project management skills
+ Self-motivated with strong organizational skills and attention to detail
+ Strong ability to multitask, meet and perform under tight deadlines, think clearly under pressure, and exercise good judgment
+ Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)

Other Requirements:
+ Ability to work weekends and nights as required
+ Passion for New York Road Runners’ mission is a plus
Salary:
+ $40/hour (Overtime Eligible)
