Position Overview

We are seeking a Systems Engineer with specialized expertise in training systems and technical writing to serve as the Training Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Technical Writer for the Airspace and Surface Radar Reconnaissance (ASRR) system. This role provides technical oversight and interface management for the training subcontractor while also serving as the internal technical writing resource. The Training SME & Technical Writer will be responsible for evaluating training contractor deliverables, challenging technical approaches, and bridging knowledge gaps for the broader engineering team, while simultaneously providing comprehensive technical writing support across all program areas. The ideal candidate will work closely with the U.S. Army, foreign military clients, and internal engineering teams to ensure successful development of training materials and technical documentation for ISR systems integration and operations.

Responsibilities Training Subcontractor Technical Oversight:Serve as the primary technical interface with the training subcontractor for all training-related deliverables and activitiesEvaluate contractor deliverables including ASRR Technical Manuals (TMs), training plans, documentation, and instructional materials to ensure they reflect implemented ASRR design and operationsChallenge contractor approaches and assumptions using training expertise to identify potential issues other team members cannot assessEnsure all technical manuals meet requirements of S1000D and MIL-STD-40051 standards and comply with military documentation standardsTrack TM development progress against established plans, identifying potential bottlenecks in production and developing means of recoveryTechnical Resource and Knowledge Bridge:Serve as the internal technical authority on training systems and documentation standards, providing guidance to program management and engineering teamsIdentify and communicate technical knowledge gaps between contractor deliverables and training/documentation requirementsTranslate complex training and documentation concepts for non-specialist team members and stakeholdersProvide technical recommendations to program leadership for training contractor-related decisionsResearch and Data Collection Coordination:Facilitate research and data collection processes to gather information supporting development of technical manual materialsCoordinate with engineering teams, subject matter experts, and operational personnel to collect accurate technical informationSupport system-level testing and verification efforts by documenting procedures, results, and lessons learned for inclusion in technical manualsCollaborate with cross-functional engineering teams including software, hardware, and integration specialists to ensure comprehensive documentation coverageComprehensive Technical Writing Support:Provide technical writing support across all ASRR program areas including engineering documentation, operational procedures, maintenance manuals, and training materialsCreate and maintain detailed system documentation including integration procedures, test plans, operational manuals, and user guidesDevelop technical specifications, architecture documentation, and requirements documentation that support both engineering development and operational deploymentGenerate contract data requirements deliverables and ensure compliance with customer documentation requirementsTraining Development and Integration:Assist in development and delivery of training materials to ensure military personnel are fully prepared to operate and maintain ISR systems in the fieldCoordinate training content development with operational requirements and actual system capabilitiesSupport creation of training programs that address both technical operation and maintenance proceduresIntegrate technical manual content with hands-on training requirements and operational scenariosStandards Compliance and Quality Assurance:Ensure all technical documentation complies with military standards (MIL-STD, MIL-PRF), S1000D requirements, and Foreign Military Sales (FMS) regulationsImplement quality assurance processes for technical writing including review procedures, accuracy verification, and version controlCoordinate documentation reviews with engineering teams and customer representatives to ensure accuracy and completenessMaintain documentation standards and style guides to ensure consistency across all technical writing deliverablesSystem Development and Documentation Support:Contribute to creation of system specifications, architecture, and requirements documentation for ISR systems, ensuring solutions meet operational needsTroubleshoot and resolve complex issues related to technical documentation accuracy, completeness, and compliance requirementsProvide on-site technical support during deployment, fielding, and operational use of ISR systems by documenting procedures and creating user guidesParticipate in risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies for documentation-related program risksCustomer Interface and Field Support:Serve as technical point of contact for documentation-related matters with U.S. Army personnel and foreign military clientsAssist foreign military personnel in understanding and using technical documentation and training materials effectivelySupport field operations by providing updated documentation, procedure clarifications, and technical writing assistanceCoordinate with customer representatives to address documentation feedback and implement required changes Required Qualifications Education:Bachelor's degree in Communications, Systems Engineering, or related STEM fieldExperience:Minimum 4-7 years of experience in technical writing with focus on complex military or aerospace systemsExperience with ISR technologies such as EO/IR, radar, SIGINT, or similar sensor systemsDemonstrated experience with S1000D and MIL-STD-40051 compliance for military technical documentationProven track record supervising technical writing contractors and managing documentation development projectsTechnical Writing Expertise:Expert knowledge of S1000D specification and MIL-STD-40051 requirements for military technical manualsExperience developing comprehensive technical documentation including operation manuals, maintenance procedures, and training materialsProficiency with technical writing tools and content management systems used for military documentationUnderstanding of document lifecycle management and version control for complex technical documentationTraining Systems Experience:Demonstrated experience with military training program development and implementationKnowledge of instructional design principles and training effectiveness evaluationExperience with training needs analysis and curriculum development for complex technical systemsUnderstanding of military training standards and requirements for ISR and sensor systemsExperience evaluating training contractor performance and deliverable qualityProject Management and Coordination:Experience tracking documentation development progress and identifying potential bottlenecks in production processesProven ability to coordinate research and data collection activities across multiple organizationsExperience facilitating collaboration between technical experts and documentation teamsKnowledge of contract data requirements preparation and delivery processesTechnical Skills:Hands-on experience with integration and testing of complex systems and ability to translate technical concepts into clear documentationUnderstanding of military platforms, systems, and operational environments, particularly related to ISR missions and technologiesAdvanced computer skills including proficiency with documentation tools, content management systems, and collaborative platformsAbility to quickly learn new engineering software tools and technical systemsTools and Systems:Proficiency with technical writing and documentation tools including S1000D authoring systemsExperience with configuration management tools such as WindChill and document control systemsFamiliarity with military standards and compliance verification
