Who will you be working with?

Working with the Operational and Engineering teams, the purpose of the Systems Engineer position is to serve as the technical leader. You will be responsible for translating customer and business needs into a clear set of project and product requirements. Through coordination and management, you will ensure the final engineered solution is fully compliant, efficient, and robustly designed to meet the highest standards of performance and safety.

What will your typical day look like?

Technical Leadership & Delivery

Lead the creation of technical design solutions that align with customer needs and project specifications.Approve technical concepts and specifications for use in the project, including calculations, reliability/safety analyses, and system test reports.Interpret and implement customer specifications to ensure the successful technical delivery of projects.Ensure all activities adhere to transit engineering procedures, design rules, and industry best practices.

Customer & Stakeholder Management

Act as the technical interface for the customer, from the initial tender phase through to serial deliveries.Cooperate with cross-functional teams (e.g., Sales, Production, Quality) on new product development, cost reduction initiatives, and risk analysis.
 

Project & Team Collaboration

Serve as the lead Systems Engineer for assigned engineering tenders and projects.Lead and coordinate engineering activities, including project design reviews and gate reviews.As a member of the project core team, provide the Project Manager with regular updates on progress, technical risks, and opportunities.Proactively manage project elements to ensure milestones are achieved within the committed budget and timeline.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical, Mechatronics, or equivalent).Mandatory Professional Registration:Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status and registration on the National Engineering Register (NER) is required.Active registration as a Registered Professional Engineer of Victoria (RPEV) is mandatory.Desirable Registration:Registration as a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) is highly desirable.

Experience

End-to-End Project Ownership: Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a systems or project engineering role where you have taken ownership of the technical solution for significant projects.Requirements Management: Demonstrable experience managing competing technical requirements in a complex project environment, preferably using a formal requirements management tool.Customer-Facing Technical Role: Proven experience in direct technical negotiation and relationship management with external customers, particularly during tender, design review, and delivery phases.Cross-Functional Leadership: Experience coordinating and influencing multi-disciplinary teams (Mechanical, Electrical, Software, Production) to achieve a unified project goal. Experience in the Australian rail industry is highly advantageous but not essential for a candidate with strong experience in a comparable safety-critical industry.
