Job purpose 

The BorgWarner Arden campus offers two world class technical centers and a cutting-edge manufacturing facility that designs and produces turbos and fan drives for the automotive industry. Position Summary:

To strengthen our Software and Controls Development Team, we are looking for a Systems Development Engineer in the development of engine software including power electronics, motors, valves, sensors, actuators, and electronic control units.  In this role you will be responsible for ensuring system requirements are defined to enable engineered software solutions are developed and validated to meet customer needs. 

 

The Systems Development Engineer (SYDE) position within this group is primarily responsible for system level software development including guiding and specifying the Software requirements for system operation and functional safety. This role operates at the intersection of software development and systems engineering and is critical in designing, developing, and maintaining complex systems.  Close communication, coordination, and collaboration with a global team will be necessary so that the Software evolves into system-level controls and hardware.  This position will support software development including modeling, design, simulation, testing, and release of software. 

 

Key responsibilities 

Responsible for defining system level software technical requirements and specifications for products that meet internal and customer needs. 

Analyse and define System Requirements 

Support System Development Lead and System Architect 

Partner with overall Systems Engineer and Applications Engineer to lead multidisciplinary and cross departmental teams on software projects within the required scope, budget, and schedule. 

Interface with Systems Engineering to ensure software requirements are documented appropriately and analyse prior to software design and implementation. 

Provide analyses to help identify the best product architecture that meets all technical requirements 

Provide technical leadership within engineering to define sub-system and component software specifications and requirements, for internal and external suppliers, to ensure system level technical requirements are met. 

Take lead role in design reviews to ensure robust integration of sub-systems and component software requirements into overall system architecture. 

Work with System Lead Engineers to develop qualification plans that will verify that all products, sub-systems and components comply with requirements. 

Identifying test cases to ensure software adheres requirements 

Work closely with Certification to ensure regulatory compliance is maintained. 

Conducting system-level and unit-level verification and validation testing 

Communicating, coordinating, and consulting with engineering departments, suppliers, and customers 

Responsible to ensure that system engineering methods are applied during the creation, development, and validation of the features.   

Define requirements, develops rollout plans, and leads all feature development to ensure it meets customer, performance, and regulatory requirements.  

Specify and structure system requirements 

Analyse source of system requirements 

Analyse system expectations and requirements. 

Support work for hardware, software, and mechanical requirements and corresponding integration and qualification testing. 

Support definition of the System Integration and Qualification test 

Work with multiple teams to integrate software changes and ensure they are validated appropriately  

Diagnose and resolve technical issues to maintain high availability and performance  

Writing bug fixes, automate tasks, implement monitoring, and manage infrastructural components  

 

What we’re looking for 

Required:  

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering or similar field 

5 years of experience in software design and development 

Experience with SW Requirements, Architecture, Design, or Integration & Test 

Experience with requirements management tools  

Knowledge of software development processes and tools such as Polarian, Jira, Bitbucket 

Ability to define software related SYS testing & evaluation 

Software project management including branch management 

Ability to interface with hardware engineers 

Knowledge of hardware software interface documentation 

Understanding of SIL & HIL testing 

Knowledge of Risk assessments or FMEA’s ISO Functional safety 

Basic knowledge of model-based software development (e.g. MATLAB Simulink) 

Basic electronics knowledge including motors, drives, and sensors 

Leadership skills as characterized by the ability to readily assimilate a broad vision of needs and create solutions that can be executed effectively. 

Ability to understand a variety of engineering disciplines 

Ability to coordinate with engineering development with individuals in multiple locations / time zones. 

Ability to work on project teams as a technical representative and possesses good communication and presentation skills. 

Understanding of V-model process including FuSa, Spice, and Cybersecurity 

Understanding of hardware, software, and network configurations 

Previous experience in system development, software engineering, or a related field  

Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, C++), understanding of system architecture, problem-solving abilities, and familiarity with automation tools. 

Conduct product prototype testing, including design verification and validation of hardware and software. 

Proficient with Microsoft office products — Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project  

Experience writing technical statements of work (SOW). 

 

Preferred: 

MSEE or MSCE with 7+ years design and development experience.  

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to coordinate testing.   

Understanding of the challenges of applying electronic components to harsh applications, principal failure modes, means to mitigate these, and the methods for validation. 

Six Sigma and Functional Safety experience 

Experience with controls simulation, motors, and powertrain management hardware. 

Strong experimental, analytical, and computer skills including ability to operate Matlab/Simulink models to produce data for analysis. 

Familiarity with electrical test equipment including oscilloscopes, power analyzers, and multimeters as well as a basic understanding of electrical safety.
