Job Title: System Safety Engineer Lead
Job Description

We are seeking a System Safety Engineer Lead for a position located at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC. This role is integral to ensuring mission success through the meticulous application of system safety engineering practices, risk assessments, and regulatory compliance in accordance with space launch safety standards. The role is on-site at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC in a classified environment. Remote work is not available.

ResponsibilitiesLead all system safety activities for a government space program from development through launch.Maintain a System Safety Program Plan in accordance with regulatory launch safety regulations, including Preliminary Hazard Analysis, Functional Hazard Analysis, System Safety Analysis/Safety Assessment Report, and support of the Hazard Tracking System.Interface with regulatory or launch range authorities to ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations.Guide cross-functional engineering teams in the implementation of design mitigations for identified hazards.Demonstrate strong communication, computer, technical writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills.Participate in launch readiness reviews, safety reviews, and milestone briefings.Essential SkillsBachelor’s degree in engineering or other technical field of study with 8 or more years of related experience.US Citizenship with minimum of top-secret DoD security clearance and the ability to obtain and maintain TS SCI.Experience with hazardous systems, including propellants, energetics, and high-pressure systems related to supporting space launch programs.Understanding of engineering concepts, principles, and theories.Proven ability to lead cross-discipline safety efforts and interface with government agencies and launch range authorities.Experience managing Hazardous materials as part of the System Safety process.Additional Skills & QualificationsMaster’s degree in a relevant field.Aerospace Industry experience, including familiarity with Department of Defense aircraft acquisition requirements (FARs and DFARs).Strong analytical skills, including data analysis and problem solving.Meticulous attention to detail.Work Environment

This position is located on-site at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC, working on newly founded R&D programs, from concept design to prototype design. The work environment requires handling hazardous materials in a purged environment, which may involve using full purges, glove boxes, and managing chemical exposure and oxygen replacement.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $60.00 - $67.00/hr.
