System Design Engineer, Chemical / Gas

Job Title: System Design Engineer (Chemical/Gas)
Type: 12-month Contract
Compensation: $67 - $110 hourly
Contractor Work Model: Remote

Position Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and motivated System Design Engineer focused on Chemical and Gas systems for a long-term contract opportunity. Reporting to the System Design Manager, you will play a pivotal role in the design, analysis, and engineering oversight of process systems for advanced nuclear reactor projects. This is a unique opportunity to work alongside a high-performing team of engineers and scientists dedicated to pushing the boundaries of technology.

Key Responsibilities:

Design and develop nuclear and industrial process systems and sub-systems, from initial requirements through to final design. Create and maintain intricate mass and energy balance models to ensure optimal efficiency. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to review thermal, seismic, structural, pipe stress, heat transfer, and other analyses, integrating findings into plant design delivery. Identify and apply relevant design codes such as ASME, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, and NFPA to ensure compliance and safety in all plant systems. Provide technical guidance and expertise in both nuclear and non-nuclear design standards, ensuring best practices are followed. Analyze and allocate regulatory criteria to complex mechanical and process system designs, maintaining adherence to industry standards. Manage project timelines and ensure integration of design activities within the overall plant design schedule. Interface effectively with design teams to create and manage comprehensive drawing packages, including Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and 3D models. Supervise the technical direction of supplier projects, working closely with the contract administrator to ensure deliverables meet project requirements. Develop and maintain system requirements and specification documents, such as Engineering Design Specifications for major plant equipment. Propose and execute testing programs to validate plant systems, including oversight during test execution and evaluation of results. Plan and conduct verification and validation activities for system, equipment, and component-level requirements. Generate design packages and technical documents, ensuring a high quality of detail and accuracy.

Key Qualifications and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Nuclear Engineering, or a related discipline from an accredited university, with a minimum of 10 years of direct experience in mechanical systems. A Master’s degree can offset two years of experience. Proficiency in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics (including liquid metals), heat transfer, materials science, system controls, and gas handling/processing. Experience with building and maintaining complex mass and energy balance models using Aspen HYSYS and Aspen Plus. Familiarity with the design, modeling, and testing of submersible electromagnetic pumps is advantageous. Strong ability to read and create P&IDs and other technical documents. Proven track record in designing complex mechanical systems, particularly within sodium environments, is especially valued. Knowledge of quality standards such as ASME NQA-1, AS 9100, ISO 9001 or equivalent. Experience collaborating with suppliers on system design and fabrication. Comfortable with risk analysis methodologies, including FMEA, Event Tree Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, and both Probabilistic and Deterministic Risk Analysis. Embraces the Defense in Depth safety philosophy. Self-starter mentality with exceptional coordination skills and the ability to manage competing objectives. Demonstrates integrity, clear communication, and a team-centric approach. Attention to detail and commitment to technical excellence. Excellent technical writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
