The Fuels and Low Carbon Technology (F&LCT) is a team of over 300 technologists, scientists and engineers who provide pioneering solutions to support bp’s Fuels, Refining, Bioenergy and Hydrogen businesses. We also support the Technology group through Innovation Management, Modelling, Digital Science and our academic research programs.
The Bioenergy & Hydrogen Technology team (B&HT) will bring together scientists and engineers dedicated to delivering low carbon energy solutions that align with bp’s strategy while also supporting the technological needs of our oil and gas projects. The team works across many bp’s businesses supporting areas such as novel feedstocks, biofuels and advanced biofuels, and hydrogen.
The opportunity
The Senior Research Associate will report to the synthetic biology manager. The successful candidate will support the execution of experiments in support of different in-house projects. The individual will join a group of interactive scientists and should have strong communication skills and outstanding inter-disciplinary problem solving and critical thinking skills, with a strong interest in the pursuit of scientific discovery. This position requires extensive hands-on work at the bench with recent experience of independently delivering experimental results.
Key accountabilities
Design and conduct experiments that deliver needed results for the research portfolio of the Biosciences CenterWork closely with other scientists to support ongoing research projectsAnalyse experimental data, interpret results and contribute to the preparation of report and presentationAttention to detail and trouble-shooting skillsAbility to work in a multi-disciplinary environment, both independently and within a project teamSupporting daily lab operations and promote safety initiatives and champion compliance with bp’s Code of Conduct.Essential criteria and qualifications
Experience in independent set-up and execution of molecular biology and microbiology related experiments along with data collection, analysis and documentation of the relevant laboratory results.Experience with laboratory methods common to microbiology and biochemistry, such as PCR, DNA/RNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, molecular cloning and cell culture.An understanding of microbiology, biochemistry and analytical chemistry principles.Ability to prioritize responsibilities, show flexibility in response to changed priorities and work effectively in a multi-tasking and matrix environment.Strong organizational skills, being able to handle multiple projects at the same time.Ability to drive for continuous improvement and to progress work.Ability to work safely and independently with no immediate supervision. Adept at formulating new SOPs as well as reliable and accurate execution of tasks following SOPs outlined by others.Knowledge of experimental design, data analysis, troubleshooting and literature search capabilities.Ability to learn quickly and acquire new skills and develop expertise in new areas of scientific interest.Promote safety initiatives and champions compliance with BP s Code of Conduct.Education
Bachelor’s degree from the following fields: biochemistry, enzymology, molecular biology, biology, synthetic biology, chemistry or related fields. With 2-4+ years or Master’s degree in related fields.Experience independently setting up and operating biological experimentsExperience collecting, organizing, analyzing, and presenting experimental dataDesirable criteria
Experience in analytical chemistry techniques such as HPLC, GC, LC-MS, or GC-MS.Experience in day-to-day lab operation and maintenanceExperience in laboratory automation workstations and/or high throughput screening.Why join us

How much do we pay ? 78- 112K. *Note that the base pay range listed for this position is a good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible base compensation at the time of posting. This position is eligible for US Benefits – Core. This position offers paid vacation depending on your years of relevant industry experience and will range from 120-240 hours if vacation per year for full time employees (60-240 hours of vacation per year for part time employees). You will also be eligible for 9 paid holidays per year and 2 personal choice holidays.
