Surgical Technologist – Part-Time, Days (30 Hours/Week)
Rotating Weekends, Rotating Holidays, and On-Call Required
Summary:
Under the direction of the Unit Manager, RN Clinical Operations Coordinator, and RN Service Leads, the Surgical Technologist supports safe and effective surgical care by working directly under the guidance of the surgeon or physician during invasive procedures.
This role requires proficiency in aseptic technique and a solid understanding of human anatomy, surgical processes, instrumentation, and evolving technologies. The Surgical Technologist is responsible for anticipating the needs of the surgical team and actively monitoring the sterile field to ensure a safe and high-quality outcome for each patient.
Surgical Technologists provide patient care by directly supporting the surgeon or physician during procedures. They must demonstrate knowledge of the procedure being performed, anticipate the clinical team's needs, and uphold the highest standards of patient safety and care. This position requires the ability to function proficiently across a wide range of surgical specialties.
Baystate Medical Center is a Level 1 Trauma Center and the region’s only academic medical center. Our state-of-the-art operating rooms support a wide variety of complex and specialized procedures, including trauma, cardiac, neurosurgery, robotics, transplant, and minimally invasive surgeries. This is a part-time, day-shift position (30 hours per week) with required call, rotating weekends, and rotating holidays.
Key Responsibilities:
Participate in staff development and maintain required competencies annually.
Demonstrate expertise in the first scrub role and responsibilities.
Effectively multitask in a dynamic operative setting.
Prepare and adapt the operating room environment to support a wide range of surgical procedures.
Work independently and remain composed under high-pressure or emergent situations.
Account for patient-specific needs by understanding normal and abnormal anatomy, pathology, and the planned procedure.
Meet the qualifications of a Surgical Technologist Level III, including current certification.
Safely manage pharmacological agents used within the sterile field, following established protocols and labeling standards.
Required Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited program recognized by the Committee on Allied Health Education Association or completion of a structured training program with professional equivalency. Certification is required for candidates without prior surgical facility experience before July 1, 2013.
Minimum of four (4) years of experience as a Surgical Technologist.
At least one (1) year of employment at Baystate Health.

Skills and Competencies:
In-depth knowledge of sterile and aseptic techniques.
Strong understanding of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and use of surgical tools and technologies.
Ability to adapt to changing clinical needs and work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
