\nJob Summary
\nThe Surgical Technologist 1 works during surgery to speed up procedures. This role assists the surgical team with equipment and tools. It ensures the operating room is safe and equipment is available and working.
\nEssential Functions of the Role
\n\nDiscuss any special needs with the surgeon before surgery. Scrub in on time to prepare instruments before the surgeon scrubs in.\nPrepares the operative site by aseptically cleaning and patient clipping, as needed.\nPrepares and maintains the instrument table(s) in an organized way. This avoids damage and incorrect instrument counts. Identifies damaged or incomplete trays. Rectifies discrepancies immediately or contacts those who can help to avoid delays or injury.\nSets up the operating room according to surgical procedure schedules. Arranges sterile setup of instrument table supplies and equipment for the specific procedure. Carefully selects and opens only needed supplies.\nEnsures the proper functioning of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies during surgical procedures.\nPerforms surgical counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and miscellaneous items, according to established policies and procedures.\nAnticipates the needs of the surgeon and surgical team staff. Passes sterile supplies and equipment to surgeons and assistants. Holds retractor devices and responds to the surgical team's needs during surgery.\nAssists the surgical team with draping and positioning the patient.\nReceive surgical specimens following protocol. Pass the specimens off the sterile field to the circulating nurse, verifying the source.\nAssists with placement of surgical dressings to operative site following surgical case completion.\nDisassembles surgical instruments at the procedure's end, recycles, and disposes of sharps, fluids, and waste properly.\nPrepares soiled instrumentation for proper transportation to decontamination area.\nEnsures the cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, maintenance, and preparation of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies for distribution.\nCleans the operating room following each case, and returns equipment to appropriate storage areas.\nFollows infection control policies, AORN Guidelines, OSHA guidelines, and other regulations to ensure a safe work environment for self, coworkers, and patients.\nEnsures proper orientation and knowledge of all equipment and instrumentation prior to patient use.\n\nKey Success Factors
\n\nComplete a CAAHEP or other nationally accredited surgical technologist program by the 180th day after graduation.\nComplete a formal surgical technology training program in the U.S. military or Public Health Service. A one-year operating room technician program is preferred.\nKnowledge of infection prevention and regulatory sterilization standards.\nKnowledge of the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique.\nKnowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and tools to assist the surgical team with invasive procedures.\nGood verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills to interact with surgical and central sterile processing team members.\nOccasional exposure to chemical or radiation hazards.\n\nBelonging Statement

QUALIFICATIONS
\n\nEDUCATION - \n\nREQUIRED- Complete a CAAHEP or other nationally accredited surgical technologist program or Complete a formal surgical technology training program in the U.S. military or Public Health Service.\n\n\nEXPERIENCE - Experience preferred but can consider Less than 1 Year of Experience\n\nGraduate or soon to be graduate of accredited Surgical Technician program required

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE/REGISTRATION
\n\nBasic Life Support (BLS): BLS or BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer.\n
