Job description:

PURPOSE

To execute surface preparation and apply industrial coatings, including primers, epoxies, and polyurethane systems, on mining equipment and structural components. This ensures corrosion resistance, durability in harsh operating environments, and compliance with site-specific safety and color coding standards. The role contributes to maintaining equipment integrity, visibility of critical safety markings, and overall operational readiness of fixed and mobile plant assets.

KEY RENSPOSIBILITIES

Prepare surfaces for painting by cleaning, sandblasting, filling, and priming as needed.Apply protective coatings and industrial paints to equipment, structures, pipes, tanks, in line with technical specifications.Perform touch-ups, repainting, and refurbishment of worn or damaged painted surfaces.Ensure proper masking and protection of non-painted areas.Mix paints to required color and consistency using appropriate ratios.Maintain painting tools and equipment in good working condition.Comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations, especially with regard to chemical use and ventilation.Interpret work instructions, safety signage requirements, and colour-coding systems relevant to mining operations.Identify and report areas needing painting or corrosion control.Keep accurate records of work performed, paint usage, and inspection findings.

Qualifications

Grade 12 Certificate (or equivalent secondary school education).Trade Certificate or Craft Certificate in Painting and Decorating, Industrial Coating, or Surface Preparation from a recognized institution.

EXPEREINCE

Minimum of 2-3 years of relevant experience in Mechanical and related jobs/tasks of which 5years must be at supervisory levelPrior experience in similar roles within the engineering industry.Proficiency in surface preparation techniques, including abrasive blasting, sanding, and chemical cleaning.Hands-on experience with various industrial coating systems (e.g., epoxy, polyurethane, zinc-rich primers).Familiarity with safety signage, colour coding, and hazard identification standards in the mining or heavy industrial context.Knowledge of safe handling and storage of paints, solvents, and associated chemicals.Ability to read and interpret technical specifications, work orders, and coating system requirements.Certification in working at heights, confined spaces, or hazardous material handling will be an added advantage.
