Travel: May require up to 5% or more travel, including travel for continuing education annually Schedule: May require work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends Qualifications Required Education and Experience + Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. + 2 years of experience in IHC (+/- IFC) techniques to include: image analysis, antibody handling and selection, antibody optimization, and troubleshooting. Preferred Qualifications + 3–5 years of experience in IHC (+/- IFC) techniques to include: image analysis, antibody handling and selection, antibody optimization, and troubleshooting + 1–2 years of supervisory or lead technician experience + Emotional intelligence/difficult dialogues/mediation training; leadership training; iLab or other laboratory management tracking system familiarity; publications; manuscript or grant writing experience; advanced image acquisition using fluorescence microscopy; skilled in digital image analysis and fluorophore selection; multimarker staining experience + ASCP certification (HT or HTL) or equivalent experience Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities + Strong knowledge of tissue processing, antigen retrieval, and staining techniques + Excellent organizational and leadership skills + Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage team workflows effectively + Basic computer skills in word processing, spread sheets, statistical analysis and presentations + Basic microscopy (Light and Fluorescence) skills + Strong desire to develop new techniques and learn new procedures + Customer service orientated with excellent interpersonal skills. + Ability to work well under deadlines. + Ability to positively interact with varied groups of university personnel. + Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. + This position may direct and/or evaluate the work of others Responsibilities Laboratory Operations and Maintenance + Perform advanced immunohistochemistry (IHC) an immunofluorescence (IFC) staining procedures, including manual and automated protocols on FFPE tissue and cryosections + Maintain, program and troubleshoot IHC/IFC instrumentation and lab equipment + Maintain adequate supply of reagents and inventory supplies to ensure efficient operation of the laboratory. + Review and implement new antibody validations and protocol optimizations for veterinary diagnostic and research needs + Ensure proper documentation and quality control processes + Develop and update laboratory standard operating procedures, as needed + Develop and maintain a procedure manual for IHC/IFC protocols for antibodies used/developed by the lab; species cross-reactivity with commonly used antibodies; and diagnosis of noninfectious conditions and infectious agents commonly encountered in veterinary medicine. Supervisory + Interviews and hires new laboratory personnel as needed. + Performs annual evaluations of job performance of laboratory personnel. + Schedules vacation and holiday duties for laboratory personnel to maintain laboratory operation during these periods. + Trains new and replacement personnel in the laboratory and conducts periodic in service training of current personnel. + Develops and implements daily to weekly schedules for maintenance of equipment and reagents. + Assigns responsibilities to laboratory personnel. + Develops a schedule of duties to be performed by the laboratory. + Resolves all personnel conflicts of laboratory personnel. + Supervise daily workflow in the IHC/IFC department, ensuring quality, efficiency, and compliance with regulatory standards + P erforms routine quality assurance of slides and works with laboratory personnel to correct deficits in quality of work products when encountered. + Troubleshoots all routine or special procedures as required + Train and mentor junior technicians and support staff + Instruct and supervise graduate students and pathology residents in developing protocols and performing IHC/IFC techniques essential for their research. Laboratory Support + Works with the laboratory director on the TAMU Finance rate study that is required every two years. + Orders all chemicals and supplies for the IHC/IFC section. Performs annual inventory of instruments and chemicals. + Collaborate with pathologists and laboratory management to support diagnostic and research needs + Collaborate with the lab core director on projects to grow and provide additional financial support for the lab, as needed Why Texas A&M University?
