Supervising Producer, Audio
The Wall Street Journal is seeking a Supervising Producer to lead the team that produces the PM edition of its daily What’s News podcast. WSJ’s What’s News brings you the biggest news of the day, from business and finance to global and political developments that move markets. We break down important news developments with insights and analysis from the reporters who covered the stories, as well as outside guests and newsmakers. In addition to overseeing the daily PM edition of What’s News, this Supervising Producer also will help oversee our weekly What’s News in Markets roundup, our weekly deep-dive What’s News Sunday episodes, and What’s News in Earnings episodes tied to earnings season. Top candidates for this role will have excellent editorial judgment, strong production experience and team-management skills, and be highly organized, with an ability to manage multiple projects at once. Collaboration, decisiveness and clear communication are critical for this position. We are seeking an experienced producer with a strong track record of pitching, developing, field producing and elevating original audio series. A background covering business news in podcasting, radio or another comparable medium is essential. Candidates with experience in storytelling in multiple formats, including narrative-style podcasting and video or video podcasting will be prioritized. You should have a proactive and entrepreneurial spirit with a startup mentality. A passion for innovation and experience managing daily productions in a global news organization are also a must. Though you will be a key manager in this unit, this is a hands-on role. You will work closely with the Deputy Editor to oversee and coordinate production of audio news, features and series, manage assignments, and help produce and edit audio. Your work will include helping to oversee video podcasts in collaboration with the WSJ Video team. This position will be based in our New York City office and reports to the Deputy Editor, Audio. You will: + Manage a small group of audio producers to produce news, interview and feature podcasts and an expected expansion into video podcasts. + Pitch, book interviews, research, fact-check, script and edit in the WSJ voice. + Propose new and original ideas for timely and relevant programming on a regular basis. + Provide clear and constructive notes and timely feedback on scripts and cuts, while inspiring the team to work creatively within tight deadlines. + Ensure all content meets the highest production value and all WSJ journalistic and legal standards are followed. + Coordinate with platforms and vendors, proactively taking all necessary steps to ensure timely and uninterrupted distribution of audio content. + Partner with the technical operations team to ensure audio equipment, studios and facilities are functioning and up to date. + Complete additional duties as assigned, including supporting other WSJ podcast productions. You have: + At least five years of experience in audio storytelling at a successful podcast or radio program overseeing a small team. Experience in video production and/or video podcasting is a plus. + Professional experience writing, reviewing and elevating scripts and communicating constructive feedback. + Strong journalistic judgment and deep understanding of current business and markets trends, domestic and international news, pop culture, tech and politics. + Demonstrated experience producing compelling programs under tight deadline constraints. + Clear communication skills with exceptional written and collaboration skills. + Experience developing new shows and managing teams, including handling performance reviews and providing regular feedback. + Professional-level understanding of Adobe Audition, Pro Tools or other DAWs. + Full knowledge of and experience with distribution and ad-serving providers. + Experience communicating with and booking talent. + Experience with field recording and on-air work is a plus.
