Newmont’s Merian operation in Suriname is an open pit gold mine approximately 66km south of the town Moengo and 30 km north of the Nassau Mountains near the French Guiana. Newmont owns a 75 percent interest in the limited partnership and Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname N.V., Suriname’s state-owned oil company, owns the remaining 25 percent interest.

Your Impact
Oversee geotechnical and water management activities to ensure ground stability, operational safety, sustainable resource use, and environmental compliance.
As part of our team you will
Develop, maintain, and execute integrated Geotechnical and Water Management Plans to support slope stability, mine design, sustainable water use, and regulatory compliance.Deliver and assess mine design parameters and water management strategies for current and future pits, waste dumps, and mine facilities.Coordinate monitoring activities, data collection, structural mapping, pit dewatering rates, core logging, and water quality assessments to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities.Conduct geotechnical drilling, mapping, laboratory testing, and oversee water supply, treatment, recycling, and discharge processes to ensure safe and efficient operations.Monitor pit walls, slopes, and water systems through inspections and instrumentation to anticipate and mitigate potential instabilities or safety issuesEstablish and maintain site-specific Ground Control and Water Management Plans, ensuring alignment with health, safety, and environmental regulations through audits and assessments.Provide technical leadership for modelling, QA/QC processes, field observations, and data systems to ensure robust analysis and effective risk management.Coordinate with cross-functional teams, consultants, contractors, communities, and regulatory agencies to align practices, ensure compliance, and address stakeholder concerns.Lead and develop the Geotechnical and Water Management Team, fostering a safe, inclusive, and high-performance culture through training, coaching, feedback, and succession planningPlan scope-of-work documentation, manage budgets, and oversee consultants and contracts to ensure delivery aligned with safety, environmental, and operational goals. Prerequisites for your success in this role
Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, or related fields.
Strong understanding of geotechnical engineering, hydrology, slope stability, water management operations, and compliance monitoring.
Knowledge of instrumentation monitoring, mine design parameters, water quality assessment, and risk management principles.
Proven ability to lead and manage teams with experience in project and/or contract management.
Advanced proficiency in geotechnical data collection, mine design parameters, instrumentation monitoring, stability analysis, and water quality assessments.
Competent proficiency in business improvement and contract management practices.
Advanced proficiency with geotechnical engineering, hydrology, and slope stability.
Advanced proficiency with geotechnical data collection, mine design parameters, instrumentation, and stability monitoring.
Advanced proficiency in risk management principles and practices.
Competent proficiency with project and/or contract management and business improvement.
Advanced English (spoken and written), Dutch preferred, and a driver's license
This position is located at Merian, at the project sites. Merian is a remote site located in a warm, humid tropical rainforest environment
The Merian mine is located in Northeastern Suriname, approximately 98 kilometers southeast of the capital city of Paramaribo and 60 kilometers south of Moengo.
Accommodation is in a camp/village environment near the workplace
Suriname has a tropical climate with dry and two rainy seasons with anticipated tropical rainfall of 1.5m to 2.5m of rain per year.
The individual is required to work 6 weeks at the site, a 3-week off, fly-in, fly-out arrangement with expat benefits. The incumbent is expected to spend most of her/his time in the field.
