Summary The Student Nurse Technician (SNT) will be given opportunities to provide basic nursing care and procedures in alignment with the competencies learned in the academic setting and validated by VA staff in order to provide care to patients/residents with acute to chronic conditions in a health care setting, and in accordance with established VA Portland Health Care System policies (VAPORHCS). Responsibilities The SNT will attend to needed and vital requirements of the patient/resident and ensure all regulatory and hospital guidelines and practices are followed, providing for a positive care experience within VAPORHCS. Major Duties: Utilizes glucose monitoring machine to collect and document appropriate glucose readings for assigned veteran, observation of patients, performs aspects of nursing care to meet patient's needs for the following: Personal Hygiene, Physical comfort, Activity, Exercise, Rest, Nutrition, Elimination, Prevention of Skin Breakdown, Rehabilitative Aspects of Care. Engages in-group activities such as off-station trips, reality orientation, current events and other therapeutic groups. Sets up patient care related equipment. Organizes and obtains routine supplies and equipment. Assists with orienting patient/family to unit routines and policies. Monitors patients according to levels of observations i.e. (I:I Veterans as well as Veterans observation status.), and Performing and documenting prescribed medical treatment and interventions for patients, such as diabetic urine testing and blood testing, simple dressing changes. Work Schedule: Varying hours between 0700 - 1930 per service needs. Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications The SNT applicant MUST meet all requirements listed below by the closing date of this vacancy: Must be a United States citizen at time of entry into Nursing program Must be proficient in written and spoken English (English Language Proficiency) Must be enrolled as a Junior or Senior in a Baccalaureate program approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).. Only data on official transcripts should be used for determining grade qualifications Not have a service obligation to any Federal, state, or private institution; or be a recipient of any Federal scholarships that incurs a service obligation. Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting and carrying (15-44 lbs); Straight pulling (1 hour); Pushing (1-2 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands and legs required; Walking (3 hours); Standing (4-6 hours); Repeated bending (2 hours); Both legs required; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Hearing (aid may be permitted); Mental & emotional stability required.
