Hiring Rate $12/hr Preferred Student Classification Sophomore/Junior/Senior/Graduate Student Nature & Purpose of Position The First-Year Student Navigator is dedicated to the mission of providing high quality, student-to-student interactions focused on early student engagement to current, prospective, and accepted students that qualify for the FORWARD program and first year students. This position will serve students directly and act as a referral agent to other units and departments as needed. The goal of this position is to ensure students have an advocate and accountability partner to increase student completion. This position will perform duties and responsibilities under the general direction of the Director of First-Year Experience. Additionally, this role will support First-Year Experience (FYE) programming including campus events, retention initiatives, and assist with daily administrative tasks. Provides one-on-one support to first-year and FORWARD students with effective strategies to overcome academic barriers, reach academic goals, and create individualized plans based on student needs. Assists in student academic case management, student outreach, and appointment scheduling. Provides peer-level academic connection and guidance and refers students to a breadth of resources. Assist with the planning and implementation of FORWARD programming including providing presentations or workshops. Accurately enters data into spreadsheets and maintains reports. Supports UNIV 1101: Bearkat U enrollment activities including, but not limited to, new student orientation and registration labs. Assist the department with guests, answer phone calls, appointment check-ins, monitor peer mentor appointments, and reschedule appointments when necessary. Supports all First-Year Experience department outreach initiatives. Other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Other Requirements for the Position Applicants must be SHSU students that are in good academic standing (2.8 GPA or higher preferred) A successful candidate should be able to multi-task, work independently, show initiative, and be detail oriented. Excellent oral and written communication skills (in person, virtually, and telephone). Passion for helping fellow Bearkats learn and succeed. Developed interpersonal communication skills, including but not limited to active listening, connecting with other students, and the ability to evaluate both verbal and non-verbal communication from students. Ability to demonstrate a mastery of the holistic elements of academia, such as time management, prioritizing, effective study strategies, note-taking, goal setting, test-taking, motivation, managing test anxiety, and using campus resources. Strong ability to present information via PowerPoint to groups of students. Proactively works on assigned tasks and can self-initiate. Working knowledge of standard office equipment, Outlook, Zoom/Teams, and Microsoft Office Suite applications.
