Purpose:

The Ohio County Solid Waste Authority (OCSWA) works to reduce landfill use, promote responsible waste management, and support community education across Ohio County, West Virginia. Through the Community Renovation (CoRe) initiative, OCSWA aims to divert usable materials from the waste stream and return them to productive use—saving taxpayer dollars, supporting local families, and improving public services. This VISTA project focuses on building long-term systems that allow OCSWA to expand its impact. The VISTA will help create and strengthen behind-the-scenes operations such as infrastructure planning, public outreach, educational content, and sustainable funding efforts. By designing collection processes, developing a workshop space, and identifying grants and local funding, the VISTA will help lay the foundation for a program that can operate efficiently and independently for years to come. The member will also develop a communication strategy —ensuring more residents are informed and engaged. This project brings practical, cost-effective solutions to waste management, while building a durable framework that increases capacity at the local level.

The AmeriCorps VISTA member will build capacity and develop sustainable solutions to alleviate poverty in underserved communities.

Description of Duties:

The VISTA will strengthen the Ohio County Solid Waste Authority’s CoRe initiative by building internal systems and expanding long-term capacity. The VISTA will develop a comprehensive plan to identify and repurpose reusable materials, support the creation of a functional workshop space for processing and storage, and research funding opportunities to draft competitive grant proposals. They will also design educational and promotional materials to raise public awareness, engage local stakeholders, and lead targeted outreach efforts to increase community involvement. By focusing on planning, logistics, and sustainable program development, the VISTA will help lay the groundwork for a lasting, community-driven approach to waste reduction and resource recovery.
