About the RoleSterile Processing Technicians play a critical role in ensuring the safety and success of surgical procedures by meticulously decontaminating, inspecting, assembling, and sterilizing surgical instruments and equipment. This position requires strict adherence to infection control protocols and sterilization standards using both automated and manual processes.
Key responsibilities include:
Decontamination of biohazardous materials following infection control and safety guidelines
Detailed visual inspection and proper assembly of surgical instrument kits
Operating sterilizers (steam, ethylene oxide, low-temperature gas plasma) according to policy and manufacturer instructions
Accurate documentation and monitoring of sterilization parameters, including biological and chemical indicators
Maintaining quality assurance standards to provide sterile, properly assembled instruments and case carts for surgeries
Prioritizing workload effectively in a fast-paced environment
Collaborating with nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals
Keeping work areas clean and organized
Inspecting sterile goods for package integrity and expiration
Performing clerical duties related to documentation and record-keeping
QualificationsBaystate Health offers a career ladder within the Sterile Processing department. Your level will be determined based on your education, experience, and certifications.
Level I
High School Diploma or GED required
Previous experience in sterile processing or perioperative environment preferred
Level II
High School Diploma or GED required
Minimum 1 year of experience in sterile processing or as an entry-level surgical technician
Level III
High School Diploma or GED required
Certified Sterile Processing Technician (CRCST)
Minimum 2 years of SPD work experience with certification
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered in lieu of formal education or certification where applicable.
