What’s the role?

We are seeking a highly experienced and motivated Staff Data Infrastructure Engineer to join our Batch Engines team. In this critical role, you will be responsible for the design, implementation, and the ongoing support of our production Apache Airflow. This position requires a deep understanding of distributed systems and a proven track record of owning and supporting production platforms. Ideally, you'll have hands-on experience with Apache Airflow in a production environment, but we're open to candidates with strong experience supporting other complex distributed data platforms and services.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager, Batch Engines team. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy. 

For this role, we are considering candidates based in Mexico, however candidates living within commutable distance of the Etsy Mexico office will be the first to be considered. Even if located within commuting distance of an office, you will have the option to work office-based, flex, or remotely.

What’s this team like at Etsy?

We are a highly experienced, senior team of software engineers responsible for the foundational data processing platforms at Etsy. Specifically, we support Apache Spark and Apache Airflow. Our team is distributed across North America, with engineers based in Canada, across the US, and in Mexico. We thrive in a remote-first, highly collaborative environment where deep technical work is balanced with close customer engagement. We work hand-in-hand with our internal stakeholders—data scientists, machine learning engineers, and other platform teams—to deeply understand their needs and help them succeed.

What does the day-to-day look like?

Own and maintain production data infrastructure systems, ensuring high availability, performance, and reliability.

Lead the troubleshooting and resolution of complex production issues across our data platform, including on-call rotations as needed.

Collaborate with data scientists, data engineers, and other engineering teams to understand their needs and provide expert guidance on data infrastructure best practices.

Design and implement scalable and robust solutions for data ingestion, processing, storage, and retrieval.

Develop and maintain comprehensive monitoring, alerting, and logging solutions for all data infrastructure components.

Participate in capacity planning and architectural reviews to ensure our data infrastructure can support future growth.

Mentor and provide technical leadership to engineers on the team.

Evaluate and recommend new technologies and tools to improve our data platform.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

7+ years of experience in a data infrastructure or site reliability engineering role, with a strong focus on supporting and maintaining production systems.

Demonstrable experience owning and operating distributed platform systems in a production environment.

Proven experience with production database administration and optimization.

Ideally, hands-on production support experience with Apache Airflow, including DAG management, scheduler optimization, and troubleshooting.

Strong proficiency in Python

Experience with cloud platforms (GCP) and infrastructure as code tools (Terraform).

Familiarity with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).

Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues under pressure.

Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

[Bonus Points] Contributions to open-source projects related to data infrastructure, especially Apache Airflow.
