Staff Counsel

This position requires 5 + years of relevant experience (after completion of Licenciatura en Derecho) in a law firm or company, excellent communication skills, and strong drafting skills. This is a generalist position, but experience is required in insurance law and desired in corporate and consumer protection law (Condusef and Profeco matters). Will consider candidates without such years of experience if they possess strong skills that are compatible with the position description (such as passion, confidence, analytical ability, good judgment, versatility, emotional IQ, and work ethic). This position will handle a variety of complex legal matters under the supervision of a legal head on a wide variety of matters related to its operations in Mexico and Colombia, including but not limited to insurance, corporate and consumer law, commercial agreements, foreign trade, corporate, foreign investment, employment, risk management, and supply chain matters. This person will interact with business managers, other internal counsel, outside counsel, and clients. This person must possess strong judgment, strong collaborative problem-solving skills and be quick, sharp, and nimble. Primary country served by this person is Mexico and Colombia as secondary country. This person will report to the legal head of Mexico.
Responsibilities:
Support the legal heads of Mexico and Colombia to provide support to the legal needs of these countries.Provide contract drafting and negotiation supportAdvise internal clients on legal and operational issues associated with client agreementsAssist with the communication and implementation of policies and procedures designed to prevent illegal, unethical, or improper conduct within the regionAdvise internal clients on various legal issues, with an emphasis on insurance, corporate and consumer law.Other duties as required based on business and legal needsSpecific job requirements:
Top tier law school in Mexico5+ years of relevant experience; national or multinational experienced preferred/desired although candidates with experience in law firm will also be consideredProfessional/advanced level in English and Spanish, both written and spokenExperience dealing in legal matters with entities in the U.S. and or Latin American countries a strong plusTelecom background a strong plusMust possess sound character, excellent legal and business judgment; be self-assured, sharp, politic and able/willing to learn new areas of lawExcellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work well with business colleagues, clients, outside counsel and opposing counselStrong drafting and negotiation skillsNimble; ability to prioritize, work without supervision, and manage effectively a large variety and number of mattersAbility to provide creative, business-oriented legal advice in a fast-paced, demanding environmentPrior in-house experience a plus
