Staff Accountant
Description We are looking for a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join our Financial Services team at a higher education institution in Columbia, South Carolina. In this role, you will collaborate with various stakeholders, including staff, faculty, students, and external service providers, to ensure accurate and efficient financial processes. This position demands strong organizational skills, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively while maintaining a high level of integrity. Responsibilities: • Reconcile general ledger accounts on a monthly basis, including cash, accounts receivable, accounts payable, debt, and credit card transactions. • Conduct quarterly grant reconciliations to ensure compliance and accuracy. • Prepare, propose, and post journal entries as needed to maintain accurate financial records. • Process and enter departmental budget transfers while responding to inquiries and providing requested information. • Maintain organized records of reconciliation work papers, journal entries, and reports in both physical and electronic formats. • Verify and process financial transactions related to donations received through the Office of Advancement. • Cross-train with team members to provide coverage during staff absences and ensure continuity of operations. • Generate and send miscellaneous invoices to external parties on a quarterly basis. • Attend out-of-state software training sessions as required to stay updated on relevant financial systems. • Assist with special projects and perform additional duties as assigned by the Controller. Requirements • Minimum of 2 years of accounting experience, preferably in higher education or a similar field. • Proficiency in managing sales tax processes and compliance. • Demonstrated expertise in preparing and posting journal entries. • Strong understanding of general ledger maintenance and account reconciliation. • Experience with cash reconciliations and financial transaction processing. • Hands-on knowledge of accounts receivable (AR) and accounts payable (AP) procedures. • Advanced computer skills, including proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite. • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks effectively.
