Description We are looking for a skilled Staff Accountant to join our team on a Contract-to-Permanent basis in Lansing, Michigan. In this role, you will play a key part in maintaining accurate financial records and ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations. Responsibilities: • Review general ledger entries and electronic banking transactions for accuracy, proposing and implementing correcting entries as needed. • Prepare monthly and quarterly journal entries, including transactions related to premiums, losses, reserves, commissions, taxes, and banking activities. • Monitor and manage loss-sensitive business transactions, including invoicing, retrospective premium adjustments, collateral tracking, and aggregate management. • Reconcile complex general ledger accounts, making independent entries when necessary to ensure accuracy. • Request disbursements for refunds, claims, regulatory filings, and commission calculations. • Compile and maintain financial schedules and reports for regulatory, external, and tax compliance purposes. • Assist in preparing routine tax schedules and returns for all organizational entities. • Respond to ad hoc requests from internal and external stakeholders, providing system analysis and financial statement support. • Support external and internal audits by preparing detailed schedules and documentation. • Identify opportunities for process improvements and propose efficiency recommendations Requirements • Proficiency in working with general ledger systems and processes. • Experience with accounts payable (AP) and accounts receivable (AR) functions. • Ability to reconcile complex accounts and ensure accuracy in financial data. • Strong analytical skills for preparing journal entries and financial reports. • Knowledge of tax compliance and regulatory requirements. • Excellent organizational and time-management skills. • Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive financial information. • Previous experience in the insurance or related industries is preferred.
