And so much more.​   ​ Come break through with us.  **Scope of Position** The Laser Processing Technologies (LPT) department, part of the Optical Physics Capability within Corning’s Materials & Interactions Division, is seeking a talented and innovative professional to join our team. The successful candidate will contribute to groundbreaking advancements in laser-based manufacturing processes, supporting the development of scalable and manufacturable solutions for current and future products. These applications span industries such as fiber optics, photonic devices, and consumer electronics. LPT leverages expertise in laser sources, material science, machine learning, precision engineering, and optics to pioneer cutting-edge manufacturing technologies. We are looking for a scientist or engineer with a strong foundation in optical physics and engineering principles, capable of developing innovative laser-based micromachining processes. Ideal candidates will have experience in areas such as optical design, laser, and photonic systems. **Day-to-Day Responsibilities** + Propose and execute new research concepts to advance the fundamental understanding of light-matter interactions, including interactions with materials such as glass, ceramics, polymers. + Build expertise in optics, materials science, mechanical design and prototyping, and laser processes; collaborate and consult with subject matter experts across various business units or research departments to foster innovation and drive impactful solutions. + Integrate optical components onto workbenches tailored for laser micro-machining applications, including ablating, cutting, welding, and other precision processes. + Prioritize process development as a critical aspect of advancing laser-based manufacturing technologies. + Translate experimental findings and theoretical insights into new optical products—passive or active—or manufacturable processes. + Document system designs, experimental results, and process outcomes; generate and file invention disclosures to protect intellectual property. **Experiences/Education - Required** + PhD degree in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or related discipline OR a MS degree in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Material Science or related discipline with at least 5 years of industry experience, demonstrating a proven track record of innovation. + Strong knowledge and hands-on experience in optics and optical systems. + Expertise in materials and their properties, including glasses, ceramics, polymers, and other relevant materials. + Solid understanding of light-matter interactions and the response of various materials to laser processing, including phenomena such as melting, ablation, and heat-affected zones. + Ability to design and optimize laser processing techniques, including cutting, welding, surface/internal modification, or additive manufacturing. + Strong process development skills, with the ability to design, refine, and implement scalable manufacturing solutions. + Exceptional problem-solving and data analysis abilities, combining creativity and analytical thinking to address complex challenges. + Outstanding oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex concepts to diverse audiences. + Proven experience working in interdisciplinary teams, collaborating with engineers, physicists, and material scientists. **Experiences/Education - Desired** + Hands-on experience in advanced simulation tools, such as COMSOL Multiphysics or ANSYS, to model and predict laser-material interactions, enabling deeper insights and driving process optimization. + Experience with techniques such as microscopy, spectroscopy, profilometry, and thermal imaging to evaluate and analyze processed materials. + Familiarity with commercial laser systems (e.g., CO2, fiber, diode, Nd:YAG, ultrafast lasers) and their applications. + Proficiency in controlling and operating laser system and laboratory equipment. + Practical experience with CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) for mechanical design and prototyping. + Practical experience with optical design tools (e.g., Zemax, Code V) for optical lens and system design. + Experience in project management is a valuable asset, demonstrating the ability to lead and coordinate complex initiatives **This position supports immigration sponsorship.** The range for this position is $102,650.00 - $141,145.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
