The Senior HR Generalist acts as a critical bridge between employees and managers. They deliver support in almost every aspect of the employee lifecycle, maintaining compliance, administering benefits and leaves, and facilitating effective communication throughout the workforce. By acting as a subject matter expert on employment policies and practices, the Senior HR Generalist contributes to operational excellence and a dynamic workplace culture. 

In addition, this role is pivotal for ensuring that HR systems and processes are maintained at the highest standard, supporting ongoing business needs, and anticipating the evolving challenges that arise in today’s fast-paced and ever-changing business environment. 

This position requires you to be on site 5 days a week in Oakland NJ.  

Key Responsibilities 

Primary Point of Contact: The Senior HR Generalist serves as the main point of contact for all employee inquiries, providing timely, accurate, and effective guidance on a wide array of HR issues. Whether addressing policy questions or guiding employees through complex processes, they ensure a seamless experience. 

Benefits Administration: The role includes the coordination of comprehensive benefits programs, such as health insurance, retirement plans, and other employee offerings. This requires regular communication with employees, vendors, and internal partners to ensure all benefits are managed efficiently and in compliance with organizational guidelines. 

Leave Administration: Administering leaves of absence programs in strict compliance with applicable laws and organizational policies is a central responsibility. The Senior HR Generalist tracks leaves, ensures all documentation is complete, and communicates with relevant stakeholders throughout the process. 

Workers’ Compensation: Oversight of the workers’ compensation program, including documentation of claims, status tracking, and effective communication with all stakeholders, is another key area. This ensures employees receive proper support while maintaining legal and procedural compliance. 

Canadian Employment Practices: The Senior HR Generalist provides support specific to Canadian employment practices, guaranteeing that the organization maintains compliance and consistency across multiple jurisdictions, particularly when managing cross-border HR needs. 

Employee Relations: Serving as a primary resource for employee relations, the Senior HR Generalist advises on workplace concerns, conducts thorough investigations, and supports conflict resolution in alignment with company policies and applicable employment laws. 

Manager Support: The position is responsible for providing day-to-day HR support to managers, ensuring timely and high-quality deliverables, and helping to address employee performance, engagement, and integration. 

Performance Management: Supporting the entire performance management cycle is a core function. This includes assisting with goal setting, performance evaluations, and professional development planning, ensuring alignment with overall organizational objectives. 

Onboarding Support: The Senior HR Generalist plays a key role in onboarding new hires, guiding managers through early-stage integration, and fostering employee engagement during the crucial first months. Regular check-ins with new employees help assess their engagement and integration, allowing for prompt support of any concerns. 

Reporting and Analytics: The role involves generating and analyzing HR reports and metrics, providing valuable insights that inform strategic decision-making and workforce planning. 

Policy Development and Communication: Developing and implementing HR policies, procedures, and quality standards as needed, and communicating updates clearly and effectively to both employees and managers, are essential duties. 

Engagement Surveys: Coordinating and supporting employee engagement surveys, including administration, data collection, and assistance with follow-up actions, ensures ongoing improvement of workplace culture and employee satisfaction. 

Promotions and Remuneration: The Senior HR Generalist collaborates with the compensation team to support promotions and remuneration processes, ensuring alignment with internal guidelines and fair, consistent application across the organization. 

HR Record Management: Maintaining and updating employee records in HR systems accurately and confidentially is fundamental to organizational compliance and efficiency. 

Payroll and Data Reconciliation: The Senior HR Generalist works closely with Finance and Accounting to reconcile payroll and related data, ensuring accuracy and compliance in all payroll transactions. 

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Participation in cross-functional projects and performance of other related duties as assigned reflect the dynamic and collaborative nature of this role. 

Qualifications and Experience 

Experience: A minimum of 8 years of experience as an HR Generalist or HR Business Partner is required, preferably in fast-paced and evolving work environments. 

Interpersonal and Communication Skills: The ability to communicate persuasively, influence outcomes, and build strong relationships with employees and managers at all levels is crucial. 

Knowledge of HR Disciplines: A broad understanding of HR domains—including talent management, employee relations, benefits administration, and regulatory compliance—is essential to succeed in this role. 

US Employment Law: Familiarity with Federal and State (NJ and CA) employment laws and practices is necessary to support national HR requirements and ensure legal compliance.

Canadian Employment Law: Familiarity with Canadian employment laws and practices is necessary to support cross-border HR requirements and ensure legal compliance in all relevant jurisdictions. 

Confidentiality and Professionalism: The Senior HR Generalist must demonstrate a high level of discretion in handling sensitive information, maintaining professionalism and ethical standards at all times. 

Organizational Skills: Exceptional organizational abilities, particularly in managing competing priorities and multiple concurrent tasks, are vital. 

Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and HRIS platforms is required. Experience with Workday is considered an asset. 

Base Pay:

Expected Base Pay Range: $110,000 to $130,000 Annualized

The base pay range included is a projected hiring range for a position, level, and potential work location(s) listed.  Topcon provides the compensation range that it in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position. This compensation range is based on a full-time schedule.   

Bonus eligible:

 In addition to base pay, compensation for this position includes eligibility for a 10% annual bonus.

*Topcon time off policies can vary between roles which are exempt or non-exempt.  For hourly (“non-exempt”) employees, we offer personal paid time off which accrues in accordance with local standards.  For salaried (“exempt”) employees, we offer a flexible paid time off policy giving you flexibility to take time when needed, while supporting business needs.  All paid time off policies are in accordance with or exceeding local law.  Employees working at least 30 hours per week are eligible for our Health and Welfare benefit package.
