Comcast NBCUniversal has announced its intent to create a new publicly traded company ('Versant') comprised of most of NBCUniversal's cable television networks, including USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and Golf Channel along with complementary digital assets Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow, GolfPass, and SportsEngine. The well-capitalized company will have significant scale as a pure-play set of assets anchored by leading news, sports and entertainment content. The spin-off is expected to be completed during 2025.
Role Purpose:
The Sr. Counsel, Litigation will be a member of NBCUniversal’s in-house Litigation Group, representing the company’s broad portfolio of television, film, and theme park businesses. The individual will be responsible for handling disputes, advising internal business clients, and litigating cases as counsel-of-record (both independently and under supervision of other in-house litigators) and/or in collaboration with outside counsel. The Sr. Counsel, Litigation will work on a wide range of matters, including general commercial disputes, consumer class actions, media litigation (including defamation claims and journalist privilege issues), employment litigation, intellectual property claims (both affirmative and defensive), insured matters, third-party subpoenas and other matters.
Responsibilities:
+ Analyzing claims and formulating litigation and early case resolution strategy
+ Conducting fact investigations and legal research
+ Drafting legal papers, including pleadings, briefs, declarations, discovery demands and responses
+ Handling or assisting with court proceedings (including federal and state court appearances), arbitrations, mediations, and depositions
+ Advising business clients and senior management on strength of claims and defenses, dispute avoidance and resolution
+ Responding to third-party subpoenas
+ Managing and working collaboratively with outside counsel, as needed
+ Managing and supervising e-discovery
+ Reporting and responding to SVP, Litigation and working closely with other senior in-house litigators and lawyers in other practice groups on a broad variety of litigation and risk issues
Basic Requirements:
+ JD Degree and New York Bar Admission (or willingness to pursue New York admission immediately upon hiring)
+ 7+ years of experience in litigation
+ Solid research and writing skills
+ Excellent communication and oral presentation skills
Desired Characteristics:
+ Exceptional academic record; journal experience a plus
+ Experience at a nationally recognized law firm or major media company
+ Experience in media, entertainment and/or intellectual property litigation
+ Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
+ Ability to work effectively under pressure; managing multiple priorities and conflicting deadlines
+ Excellent communication, organization, and negotiating skills
Additional Requirements:
+ Must be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed
Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the New York, NY office a minimum of three days per week.
