Program Overview: 

KBR’s ASTRO (Advanced Space Technology Research and Optimization) contract to provide mission equipment operations, maintenance, and upgrades to the USSF’s AMOS site in Maui, Hawaii. The AMOS site plays a vital role in national security by monitoring man-made objects in space and continuously developing next-generation capabilities to keep pace with the expanding space domain. This presents an incredible opportunity to push the boundaries of space and telescope technologies.

Position Overview:

KBR is seeking a highly skilled Controls Engineer to design, develop and implement control systems for telescope systems and subsystems including mounts, sensors and automated processing and control. Designs and implements software and hardware control systems to control and monitor sensors, telescopes and mechanical equipment. Works within a flexible Agile process to provide end-to-end solutions to automate collection, processing and dissemination of sensor data. Develops solutions to monitor system health and status and automate routine HW and SW functions and data analysis. Support the Government customer’s goals of enhancing security, scalability and operational efficiency. Creates and implements high-quality, efficient and fully operational SW controls of HW. Designs, supports and performs testing/debugging of integrated HW/SW systems to maintain high operational uptime and meet functional requirements and user needs. Proficient in SW control of HW and a deep understanding of complex systems. 

Key duties and responsibilities:

Design and develop control systems and strategies to control mission systems including mounts, sensors, and ancillary equipmentConduct integrated system testing and debugging to ensure functionality and reliabilityEvaluate and analyze systems to identify performance defects and areas of improvementDevelop strategies to maintain and modernize HW/SW to provide high reliability and minimize system downtimeWork with interdisciplinary teams to meet system performance and reliability goalsProvide technical support for system installation, maintenance, diagnostics and troubleshooting to identify and correct issues in real-timeConduct system simulations and testing to ensure functionality and performanceDevelop specifications and detailed documentation for system design, component level-specifications and interface controlsDevelop system, maintenance, and troubleshooting documentationProgramming and configuring electronic, mechanical and optical systemsProvide training and technical support to maintenance staff and usersKeep up-to-date with the latest technology trendsContribute to the continuous improvement of control systems and practices

Duties include monitoring AMOS Government staff and Stakeholder mission needs, documenting, requirements and assisting with development of plans to meet those needs, including support to integrate new equipment, sensors, or conduct off-nominal operations. This engineer takes a holistic approach to developing solutions, working with Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance staff to identify integrated HW/SW solutions that meet the Government’s needs. Assists with identifying and mitigating risk, resolving issues, and ensuring user/customer satisfaction. Additional responsibilities include mentoring less experienced staff and assisting the Government in identifying solutions to improve quality of services provided. This engineer is a disciplined self-starter with strong organizational, time management, comprehension, and communication skills.  

Minimum Qualifications: 

Bachelor’s degree in Controls Systems Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Electro-Optics, or related discipline from an accredited institution. 

Proficiency in programming languages such as C++, Python or Java

Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills

Experience with developing and documenting requirements and specifications and build test plans and procedures

Minimum of 10+ years experience in providing Engineering support to complex projects spanning multiple Engineering disciplines

Desired Qualifications: 

Experience working as an engineer supporting custom industrial equipment

Familiarity with PLCs and HMIs

Strong understanding of control theory

Experience with embedded programming and device drivers

Clearance: Active Secret desired, eligibility for [Secret/TS/SCI] required 

Compensation range:  

$142k-213k

The offered rate will be based on the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, abilities and/or experience and in consideration of internal parity.  

   

Additional Compensation:  

KBR may offer bonuses, commissions, or other forms of compensation to certain job titles or levels, per internal policy or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be in the form of sign on bonus, relocation benefits, short term incentives, long term incentives, or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.   

Work Environment:  

KBR supports work from home when compatible with meeting contract requirements. AMOS is a dynamic work environment, and this contract supports routine operations of and maintenance of mission equipment, as well as the need to respond to real-world events. To the extent possible, schedules are forecasted in advance, but upgrades, maintenance or significant tests require personnel to be present in the telescope facilities on Haleakala or Government’s Kihei office. Candidate must have effective verbal and written communication skills; must be able to adapt communication style to suit different audiences or facilitate group discussions; develop accurate written materials to communicate information clearly and concisely.
