Compensation includes a base salary of $99,000.00 - $165,000.00. The base salary may vary within the anticipated base pay range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilities. Cox Communications is seeking a Senior Communications / Network Engineer to join our team. This individual will play a critical role in the planning, implementation, and support of our Wi-Fi platform and associated infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise in wireless networking, routing, switching, security protocols, and firewalls, as well as the ability to lead projects and troubleshoot complex issues in a high-scale service provider environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Act as a subject matter expert in wireless technologies including routers, switches, wireless LAN controllers, and access points.
Lead design, implementation, and testing of new network infrastructure and services.
Support configuration, deployment, and integration of wireless systems and applications.
Troubleshoot and resolve advanced network issues using tools such as Wireshark, packet captures, and logs.
Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to develop network designs, configuration standards, and testing strategies.
Manage advanced-level projects, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with business objectives.
Participate in scheduled on-call rotations and planned maintenance activities.
Mentor junior team members and provide guidance to support teams.
Create and maintain detailed documentation including network change tickets, test plans, and system configurations.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 4+ years of experience, or 8+ years of directly relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
Intermediate knowledge and hands-on experience with:
Wi-Fi technologies and IEEE wireless standards (802.11)
Routing and switching protocols (OSPF, BGP, MPLS)
Security protocols (WPA2, EAP, 802.1x, AAA, RADIUS)
Packet-based protocols (IP, DHCP, DNS, TCP/UDP)
Unix/Linux systems and scripting (CentOS, RHEL, FreeBSD)
Firewall configuration and management across enterprise environments (e.g., Palo Alto, Fortinet, Cisco ASA)
Familiarity with network analyzers such as Wireshark.
Strong communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Industry certifications such as CCNA, JNCIA, or NRS II.
Tiered technical service environment in the telecommunications industry.
Experience with DOCSIS provisioning technologies.
Exposure to network monitoring systems and tools like SNMP, Cacti, Nagios, or Zabbix.
Experience designing and managing large-scale service provider wireless networks.
Participation in SCTE and related certifications.
