Team Summary

The Visa Asia Pacific Legal team manages Visa's legal affairs in the Asia Pacific (AP) region. Our team provides advice and services to ensure business goals are met while protecting Visa's brand and reputation and minimizing legal liability and regulatory risk. What a Sr. Associate Counsel in Legal does at Visa:

We are seeking a proactive product and commercial lawyer to join our growing Legal team, based in our Singapore office, focusing on supporting Risk and Identity Solutions in the Asia Pacific region. This role may also support the development and expansion of new and existing products within Visa’s Value-Added Services business, including cybersecurity services and legal integration of acquisitions in the risk and identity space. The position reports to the Senior Managing Counsel in Visa’s Asia Pacific Legal team supporting Visa’s Value Added Services businesses and the Privacy and Risk and Compliance functions within the AP region.

The applicant should have extensive legal experience within the AP region, including a good understanding of relevant commercial, technology, IP, and financial services laws. Experience of the development and implementation of AI or Gen AI based platforms, systems, or products would be advantageous. The applicant must have solid technical legal skills, good commercial as well as legal risk judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Strong negotiation skills, good judgment, and being a creative problem solver are essential. The applicant should be self-motivated, optimistic, curious, and a collaborative team player.

We are looking for a strong legal advisor and commercial lawyer with excellent communication and analytical skills. Prior payments experience is not essential, but the applicant must be willing to learn Visa's business model and the payments industry.

In this role, you are expected to:

Work closely with country and business teams to review and advise on the legal impact of new or updated laws on new business initiatives, as well as existing products and services.Be an effective representative of the AP Legal team, liaising with other regional and country lawyers to resolve regional and local issues and ensure consistency in approach.Monitor the legal and regulatory landscape across the AP region, analyzing any potential impact on Visa’s business.Conduct or coordinate product regulatory reviews in various AP markets to ensure alignment with applicable laws and support new business initiatives.Be a dedicated resource for various business functions within the Value Added Services business providing products and services to Visa’s clients, and play a leadership role in supporting the development and implementation of new risk, security and AI-based solutions in the AP region.Draft standard product terms and templates for use in support of Visa’s current and new business initiatives across the Asia Pacific region.Draft, negotiate, and complete complex commercial, technology, or strategic partnership agreements in support of business objectives.Review externally facing documentation (including product-related materials) for compliance with applicable laws and policies.Provide pragmatic and creative advice to business teams regarding product development and implementation, identifying and resolving legal issues and risks.Coordinate and supervise outside counsel for timeliness, cost-effectiveness, and quality of advice.

QualificationsDegree in LawHave a minimum of 8 years of corporate, commercial, or technology transactions experience, some of which must be at a top-tier law firm or MNC.Have prior experience in at least one of the following sectors: payments, financial services, technology, or fintech, including drafting and negotiating a wide array of commercial agreements. Experience of supporting AI or Gen AI based products is preferred.Be able to work independently and collaboratively, engaging with business stakeholders at all levels, and be a good team player.Be a practical and creative problem-solver with strong business acumen, able to understand the company's business interests and anticipate potential issues. Be confident, mature, and calm under pressure.Demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly and concisely with multiple stakeholders, including senior executives. Be able to multitask and manage a significant workload with minimal supervision.Demonstrate excellent project management skills and experience, managing and driving the legal and regulatory aspects of complex commercial and technology transactions, including international and regional deals.Have a strong understanding of technology and commercial laws in Singapore and other AP jurisdictions. Knowledge of AI, privacy, or competition laws is advantageous.Have excellent legal analytical skills, integrating legal advice and business knowledge while providing balanced advice regarding risks and benefits.Be admitted to practice in Singapore or in a Commonwealth jurisdiction.
