Senior Radiation Protection (RP) Technician - Plant Hatch

Southern Nuclear, headquartered in Birmingham, AL, operates Southern Company's eight nuclear reactors at three locations in Georgia and Alabama: four reactors at Plant Vogtle, near Waynesboro, GA; two reactors at Plant Hatch, near Baxley, GA; and two reactors at Plant Farley, near Dothan, AL.

Requirements:

This posting is for Senior Radiation Protection Technician level personnel for an initial Radiation Protection Department that requires accomplished RP experience, skills, and must meet 18.1 ANSI - 1971 requirements.  

Two years of Radiation Protection related work experience (4000 hours over a minimum of 80 weeks, 1 year of nuclear power plant experience) is required. In addition, they must be able to pass the EEI Technical Occupations Selection System Test.  


Education / Equivalent Preferences:

Bachelor's degree in Health Physics or Physical Science (Biology, Microbiology, Physics, Chemistry, or Math), OR Associate's degree in Radiation Protection Technology, preferred OR US Navy Nuclear ELT (24 months), preferred


Summary of Duties:

As a Senior RP Technician, you will ensure the occupational radiation safety of plant workers and provide technical support to the Radiation Protection Department through the following:

Monitoring Radiation Controlled Areas on a regularly scheduled basis using fixed and portable survey instruments to evaluate contamination and airborne radiation levels and to assist in establishing dose rates for job coverage Storing, issuing, and testing of respiratory protection equipment Assisting in or becoming lead for repair and calibration of fixed and portable radiation survey instruments when required Providing Radiation Protection coverage to plant operations and maintenance personnel to ensure safe radiological practices Providing radiological evaluation of area decontamination activity Preparing Radiation Work Permits Providing support to plant dosimetry program, as needed Providing support for radioactive waste shipments as required. Implementing the process control program as required. Reviewing work packages, projecting exposure for job, evaluating need for shielding, and briefing with technicians and workers on work activities Performing ALARA job reviews and maintaining a job history file for ALARA packages Tracking ALARA suggestions, reviewing and taking necessary action Pursuing methods for improving the ALARA program's performance and efficiency and to increase the awareness of all plant groups of this Program. Photo documentation of plant areas for use in future ALARA job planning Serves on the on-shift Emergency Response Organization



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Experience in a technical radiation protection program    Must perform daily with a safety-focused attitude and commitment to zero accidents or injuries. Ability to enforce Radiation Protection requirements and stop work when compliance is jeopardized. Strong knowledge of Radiation Protection fundamentals is required. Proficient in the use of a personal computer. Good written and verbal communication skills. Knowledge of nuclear power plant procedures, regulations, systems, and processes is a plus. Demonstrates an interest in acting as a mentor for lesser experienced Radiation Protection personnel.  Any applicant accepting this position will be required to meet background screening & security and company physical requirements. Must have capacity to be respirator qualified. Successful completion of the Technical Occupations Selection System (TECH) test 

 

This position is covered by a collective bargaining unit and will pay $56.19/hr.
