Summary:
The Sr. Packaging Manager is a critical business partner to their assigned strategic business unit, category, supply chain, engineering, etc. to determine strategic direction in the development of new packaging platforms to support innovation, cost savings, sustainability, and to allocate packaging resources to meet their assigned business unit objectives. The Sr. Manager manages a team of individual contributors in applying technological innovation in equipment, materials, sustainability, processing, or package design including packaging development specifications. The Sr. Packaging Manager manages a team of individual contributors in all phases of employment such as hiring, budgets, performance management, career development, training, and coaching. The Sr. Manager is a member of the Packaging leadership team developing the vision and creating solutions to technical hurdles. The position works locally with other technical organizations to implement best practices. The Sr. Packaging Manager drives the culture of Tyson Right Behaviors (Results, Innovate, Grow Mindset, Humility, and Teamwork) within the Packaging Team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Manages direct contributors in applying technological innovation in equipment, materials, processing, sustainability or package design including packaging development specifications.Manages direct contributors in all phases of employment such as hiring, performance management, career development, training, and coaching.Implements the Packaging Department’s visionLeads creative solutions to technical hurdles as a member of the Packaging R&D team.Critical business partner with assigned business unit to determine strategic direction.Critical business partner with assigned business unit, Insights, Innovation, and Supply Chain Engineering to develop new packaging platforms to support innovation platforms.Critical business partner to assigned business unit management team to allocate packaging resources between to meet BU objectives.Develops and monitors partnerships with suppliers to create new and unique packaging and processes. Drive integrated Packaging Department financial plan achieving financial objectives. Assists in developing and managing departmental budget through cost analysis and controlling and approving expenses.Manages packaging lab and pilot plant packaging equipment activities. Drive cost reduction identification/implementation for packaging materials and process.Manage cross-functional packaging project teams to support new products and increase quality and consumer acceptance of current products/packaging.Supports Tyson’s packaging sustainability efforts and interacts with key customer such as Walmart.Supports culture of providing technical support to project teams to solve manufacturing problemsMaintain current knowledge base on FDA/state regulations concerning packaging materials.Implements methodologies to develop rapid design and prototyping & consumer-based packaging design.Supports a dual career path managerial and technical ladder based.Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with operations/divisional management and external customers.Supports R&D teams to implement best practices.Leverages technology platforms for packaging development.Facilitates cross-functional teams in the alignment and execution of packaging development and optimization.Participate in cross-industry organizations, such as IOPP, PMMI, AMI, NAMI, SFI, GFSI/BRCDevelops self and others utilizing the Tyson Right Behaviors (Results, Innovate, Grow Mindset, Humility, and Teamwork).Other duties as needed and/or assigned.Requirements:
Education/Certifications: Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering or related field required.
Experience: 8 years of relative work experience with 4 years in an advanced technical or leadership position managing individual contributor, cross-functional teams, and/or packaging suppliers.
Previous experience with Fresh and Further Processed packaged meat a plus
Proficient with product and packaging interactions, sustainability, food protections, and package testing.
Proficient in packaging equipment, packaging processes, and working with supply chain engineering on capital projects involving packaging solutions.
Demonstrates effectiveness in managing/recommending projects that will lead to opportunities in innovation, growth, intellectual property, and profitability.
Computer Skills: Requires basic computer skills. For example, generating simple letters, spreadsheets and creating simple queries. May require knowledge of Tyson Business Computer. Familiarity with Cape, Tops, ArtiosCad, CAD, etc.
Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Strong presentation skills required. Must have the ability to effectively communicate and influence with all functional and business unit management levels.
Special Skills: Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Strong project management skills. Strong planning and organizational skills. Strong leadership qualities to lead and develop a team.
Supervisory: Indirect: 1+ / Direct: 1+. Mentor to the junior members/interns of the Packaging Department
Travel: 25% - 12+ domestic or international trips per year.
